Jesus said, “I am the vine, you are the branches.” This is the image He uses to explain the connection between Him and His disciples. The branches need the vine to survive, cut off from the vine they wither and die, to bear fruit they must be pruned. It is another beautiful image depicting the relationship between Jesus and the members of His Church. We need to be connected to Jesus to have life and be fruitful, if we take our focus off Jesus, we lose that connectivity and our humanity withers. All relationships need nurturing and care to be life-giving and life-sustaining, none more so than our relationship with Jesus, the source of our life. We are fruitful when we share our gifts with others - not for our own self-interest but in love. We need a little 'pruning' in our lives too - our ego needs pruning because of selfishness and pride. Listening to God's Word, obeying His Commandments help us become more aware of our weaknesses. Learning from our sufferings and mistakes help us become more caring and compassionate. Love and service to those around us communicates God love - love in action. It can be the smallest thing, like a smile or a word of encouragement and we may never know the good effect. God sees all that is done in love. To be fruitful people, we need to stay connected to Jesus and His church - we will wither and die, becoming loveless and empty if we cut ourselves off.
