Greatest Canadian Essay

History can be defined or changed by many factors. Perhaps the greatest factor is the human factor. The course of Canadian history in the 20th century underwent tremendous change. During these one hundred years Canada grew from no more than a colony to a globally respected middle power. The question remains how? For the past one hundred years a countless number of great Canadians, some famous and some nameless, have conspired to alter the path of Canada, forever improving this great country.

Who are these great Canadians?

What are their great achievements?

How have their achievements changed Canada?

How would Canada be different if they would not have affected such great change?

These are just a few of the questions you will answer in your major independent study this semester in history.

Task

Your task is to research and write a short research essay of between four to five type written pages, or 1000-1250 words. Your topic is the greatest Canadian.

Scenario

Most recently, a contest was opened in Ottawa, at the urging of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, to decorate six empty bases for statues along the Laurier Bridge just down from the Parliament Buildings and across from the Chateau Laurier. The Prime Minister has urged that the competition focus on the selection of six of the greatest Canadians of the 20th century. You have decided to take up the challenge and your submission will take the form of your essay. In your essay you will select and defend your choice.

Steps

Your first two steps in this process will take place in M.S.I.P. during the first two weeks of the semester. The first is an introduction to some of the greatest Canadians who have ever lived and consists of watching a DVD. The second step is an analytical exercise which focuses on understanding what exactly denotes a great Canadian. Both of these exercises require written entries which must be handed in. After this, please follow the steps that are listed on the back of the sheet. Remember, all these steps require typewritten submissions. This essay will count for half of your final exam grade.
