COURSE DESCRIPTION: WELD 221 – 3 credits

Continues WELD 211 with emphasis on developing SMAW welding skills in the vertical and overhead positions. The course introduces gas metal arc welding (GMAW), flux cored arc welding (FCAW), and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW).

Course Prerequisites: WELD 211 or consent of instructor

Co-requisites: WELD 221

PREREQUISITES:

1.  20/20 vision (corrected)

2.  Good hand-eye coordination

3.  General good health

SUPPLIES:

A list of required and optional supplies will be covered the first meeting of the class.

INSTRUCTIONAL DELIVERY:

4.  Instructor supervised hands on practice and assignments

WELD 221 COURSE CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES:

Produce high quality welds in the vertical and overhead positions using the SMAW process.

Set up GMAW equipment and conduct basic operations.

Set up FCAW equipment and conduct basic operations.

Set up GTAW and conduct basic operations

GRADING:

Assignments: Students are expected to be prepared for all class discussions and lab activities by reading all assignments in textbooks and/or instructor prepared handouts before class begins. Lab activities are designed for hands-on learning experience as well as for completing welding and cutting assignments for a grade.

Attendance: Students are expected to attend all class/lab sessions. Occasional absence is sometimes unavoidable. Unless absence has been approved by instructor prior to day of scheduled class10 points will be deducted from each day missed. Make up points will be available through extra credit opportunities given by instructor.

Grades: Grades will be based on attendance, homework assignments, tests/quizzes, completed lab assignments, and the written final. There are 500 points that can be earned.

Grades will be assigned on the overall percentage of work completed.

A 92.5 or above, A- 89.5, B+ 86.5, B 82.5, B- 79.5, C+ 76.5, C 72.5, C- 69.5, D+ 66.5, D- 59.5, F 59.4 and below

RULES FOR LAB

The student will wear safety glasses while in the lab at all times! There will be NO SMOKING in the classroom or lab.

The student will be expected to provide the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and required supplies. Students will follow ALL safety rules and regulations. Students will not use any equipment in the lab until they have been instructed on its safe use.

Changes in Course Requirements and/or Syllabus:

Instructor reserves the right to change course requirements and syllabus contents as circumstances dictate. You will be given notice if the course requirements need to be changed.

Student Conduct Policy:

The primary responsibility for managing the classroom environment rests with the academic faculty. Students who engage in any prohibited or unlawful acts that result in the disruption of a class may be directed by the faculty member to leave the class for the remainder of the class period. Longer suspensions from a class, or dismissal on disciplinary grounds, must be preceded by disciplinary proceedings in accordance with the WNC Policies and the Board of Regents Code. WNC Policy Manual 3-4-4: Section 7.

Academic Integrity Policy:

Academic dishonesty is any form of cheating and plagiarism which results in students giving or receiving unauthorized assistance in an academic exercise or receiving credit for work which is not their own. Academic dishonesty is a behavioral issue, not an issue of academic performance. As such, it is considered an act of misconduct and is subject to the College disciplinary process as defined in the Nevada System od Education Code. WNC Policy Manual 3-4-5: Section 3.
