Charter for Students on Placement in South West London
Applicable to students on placement within NHS organisations
For the duration of your placement, you will have access to library services through the NHS organisation where you are based.
The University’s libraries stock books and journals bought specifically in support of your course, and these remain your primary library resource. NHS libraries will not necessarily hold course reading list items. This applies equally to electronic sources of information - the University’s electronic resources remain your principal source of information. Electronic resources can be accessed away from the University once you have your Athens username and password.
All services offered by NHS libraries are on a goodwill basis, and should not be abused. You must ensure you return all the books you have borrowed before you finish your placement; if you fail to do so, your borrowing rights at the University’s libraries will be suspended until the books have been returned.
Students on placement will normally be offered core library services including:
•Access to the library during staffed opening hours
•Access to printed materials, e.g. books and journals
•Access to limited loan services[1]
•Access to study facilities in libraries
•Access to photocopying services (for which a fee is normally payable)
•Assistance from library staff in locating materials
Students on placement may additionally be offered:
•Induction to local NHS library services
•Access to library computers
•Access to clinical databases and other electronic resources
Any additional services are at the discretion of the NHS library manager.
The following services are not normally offered to students on placement:
•Training on electronic resources. Although some assistance may be provided, in-depth training is the responsibility of the University’s libraries. Please contact your University library for more details.
•In-depth enquiry or search services
•Interlibrary loan requests: see the university library’s website for information
