Charity Director – Job Profile

Salary: Band E £35,000 - £45,000 per annumpro-rata

Hours: full time, 37.5 hours per week

Responsible to: Board of Trustees

Aims and Objectives of the role:

The Charity Director is responsible for the strategic oversight with the Board and for the operational management of the day to day running of the Charity and is delegated this duty by the Board of Trustees which establishes the accountability frameworks.

The Charity Director, with direction from the Board, sets the direction and strategy of the Charity. The Charity Director, as set out in the organisation’s Scheme of Delegation, is responsible for setting the organisation’s budgets, driving and embodying the working culture of the Charity, overseeing HR, managing the management team, being responsible for day to day decisions, identifying strategic risks and ensuring appropriate strategies are in place to mitigate and tackle these, ensuring best practice is being met in line with the organisation’s policies, procedures and relevant legislation.

The Charity Director will report to, and work closely with, the Board and is line managed by the Chair of Trustees.

It is envisaged that Caring in Bristol will grow the work it does in the future and the Charity Director will be expected to assist the Board of Trustees as it plans and implements any expansion.

Key responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Development
  2. To provide strategic leadership for Caring in Bristol;
  3. To develop, deliver and implement the strategic aims and plan of the Charity and its vision, mission and values, as agreed with the Board of Trustees and to regularly review its implementation;
  4. To actively look for opportunities to fulfil the Charity’s strategic aims and objectives;
  5. To agree strategic operating plans with the management team and ensure these are communicated effectively to all staff;
  6. To report to the Board of Trustees, as agreed, to satisfy them that the responsibilities they have delegated are being discharged properly and performance is addressed as required. The Charity Director will be expected to attend and report to Board Meetings and any relevant committees;
  7. To introduce and ensure effective monitoring, evaluation and consultation processes are in place so that our services’ users and stakeholders are engaged in the development of our work;
  8. To be responsive to the changing context around homelessness,and other related business areas, obtaining market knowledge so that, in conjunction with the Board, strategic decisions can be made in terms of seizing opportunities for sustainable growth and expansion; and
  9. To deliver and lead on the development and sustainability strategies and plans for the Charityand manage change effectively.
  1. Compliance and Infrastructure
  2. To ensure the Charity meets and exceeds all requirements in terms of legislation, health and safety, Charity Commission guidance, safeguarding, fundraising regulation and any other relevant regulatory frameworks that apply;
  3. To effectively manage all organisational contracts with third parties;
  4. To develop, implement and review all organisational policies and procedures at the agreed, appropriate frequency;
  5. To ensure all staff are trained within an identified framework and have on-going training needs identified and met to assist them to maintain the standards legally requiredand to enable staff to develop;
  6. To ensure we meet the standards that we and other partners/funders have set in order to ensure our operations and service delivery are of the highest standard;
  7. To ensure that the organisation’s infrastructure is appropriate and flexible, is adequately budgeted for and resourced in a timely manner;
  8. To ensure that the organisation conforms with relevant legislation in relation to data protection and processing, including General Data Protection Regulations, as the nominated Data Controller for the organisation;
  9. To ensure robust quality assurance processes are in place for all relevant areas of the organisation’s activity and oversee continuous improvement; and
  10. To actively promote equality and diversity in line with organisational policy, procedure and development aims and to develop practice within the organisation that prevents exclusion, tackles inequality and discrimination.
  1. Income Generation
  2. To oversee the development and implementation of the Charity’s fundraising strategy;
  3. To actively seek opportunities to grow, maximise, diversify and build income streams to support greater organisational resilience;
  4. To ensure the fundraising team have the resources to achieve annual fundraising targets in line with strategic priorities;
  5. To promote effective communication strategies with all stakeholders, but most notably new and existing donors;
  6. To actively seek to raise Caring in Bristol’s profile with supporters, in line with the fundraising strategy; and
  7. To ensure all the Charity’s fundraising activities comply with the law and any other regulatory requirements, and demonstrates best practice.
  1. Financial Management
  2. To work with the Board of Trustees to develop a realistic and achievable organisational budget;
  3. To report to the Finance Committee, as agreed, about the financial position of the Charity, including the provision of management accounts to the Board and to work with the Finance Committee to produce end of year accounts;
  4. To lead on budgeting and forecasting and overseeing appropriate financial management and control;
  5. Provide accessible and transparent financial reports for the Board of Trustees and other stakeholders as and when required;
  6. To ensure that restricted fund accounts are maintained and that the financial records comply with funder reporting requirements;
  7. To oversee quarterly monitoring and monthly reporting processes to evaluate performance against budget, review risks and issues and agree corrective actions with Project Leads/Board of Trustees; and
  8. To work closely with the external bookkeeper in the compilation of accurate accounting records, and the processing of monthly and weekly payroll.
  1. Staff Management and Relationships
  2. Alongside the Trustees and management team, ensure the approach taken in our work meets the values of the Charity and that this culture is understood, embedded and demonstrated throughout the Charity;
  3. To provide inspiration and leadership to staff, volunteers and supporters, encouraging them to be engaged to deliver our aims and strategy,
  4. To directly line manage and supervise the Assistant Director;
  5. To delegate and / or allocate work to the appropriate staff;
  6. To provide strong and clear leadership for the management team and the wider staff team, promoting a positive and supportive environment to work in;
  7. To oversee the Charity’s HR processes, ensuring it recruits, supports and retains high quality staff;
  8. To promote, develop and manage positive, professional relationships with and within:
  9. Staff team
  10. Trustee team
  11. Beneficiary groups (volunteers, visitors, service users etc.)
  12. Partners (other service providers, partner charities); and
  13. To protectand enhance the reputation of the Charity, act as spokesperson for the organisation and use the media appropriately to positively raise the Charity’s profile.
  1. Other Responsibilities
  2. Promote the aims and objectives of the Charity and present a positive image of it through good public relations, communications with visitors, young people, guests, people who use our services and the local community;
  3. Seek to continually improve own knowledge and abilities in the field of charitable leadership and strategic management;
  4. Follow organisational policies and procedures and observe the Code of Conduct; and
  5. Actively participate in and attend supervisions, annual appraisal processes and identified training.
