Chapter 7 - Rowe of Carbonear
The earliest appearance of the Rowe surname in Carbonear belongs to two individuals who were likely brothers: Henry Rowe, born c.1780 and Benjamin Rowe, born c.1786, place of birth unknown. These Rowes do not appear to be connected to the Rowes of Heart’s Content.
Benjamin Rowe first appears in his marriage to Elizabeth Parsons on January 29, 1811. Elizabeth was a daughter of Jonathan Parsons and Susannah Sheppard, born Feb.14, 1788 and died in 1857. His name also appears as a constable attesting to one of the 1835 Voter’s lists for Carbonear. He died Jan.13, 1849 at age 64 per Methodist church records.

Henry first appears in Carbonear Methodist church records as a witness to the marriage of Benjamin Rowe and Elizabeth Parsons on Jan. 26, 1811. (another indication that they may be brothers)
Of Henry’s children recorded in Methodist baptismal records, no males are listed. Henry is identified as a teacher, married to Catherine, and their immediate descendants are:

In 1831 Henry appears in a list of property owners at Carbonear, living on the North Side adjacent to Michael Maddock, Ed. Liver and Cotter. The same list shows Benjamin Rowe, a constable, living at North Side, adjacent to Susannah Sweetland and Henry Rowe. An ancient document (see below), dated Dec.18, 1830, shows property at the corner of Crossroads and Grassy Lane occupied by Henry Rowe (Grant 136, vol.3, folio 139) on the north side and Benjamin Rowe (Grant 152, vol.3, folio 376) on the south side.
Henry’s wife Catherine died Dec.26, 1852 at age 72 giving her a birth year of c.1780. Henry’s death was recorded as Nov.6, 1833 and listed in a Carbonear newspaper as “schoolmaster of this town” but no age was given.

There is the death of a Benjamin Rowe of Carbonear (mentioned above) recorded in Vital Statistic records of Carbonear occurring in Labrador in August of 1893 at an age of 36. This age doesn’t fit this Benjamin or the Benjamin, son of Joshua who was born in 1865. An age of 36 would mean he was born c.1857. There is no other Benjamin Rowe of Carbonear in any church or civil records.
