Chapter 3 – The Emergence of Colonial Structures

Essential Question: What were the social, economic, political, and religious differences between the New England, Southern, and Middle Colonies of New England as well as the Spanish and French colonies?

I.  New England

A.  Why was the “City Upon a Hill” established and how did it affect the moral attitudes of Puritan life?

B.  What social characteristics did a “proper” Puritan family have and how did living conditions affect societal interaction between the families?

C.  How did Puritan orthodoxy affect the political structure of New England?

D.  Why did Puritan orthodoxy create dissent among members and what was the reaction to increased questioning of Puritan morality?

E.  How did the relations with Native Americans affect the Puritan lifestyle?

F.  What were the causes, events, and effects of the Salem Witchcraft Trials?

II.  The Chesapeake Colonies

A.  How did religion affect society in Virginia, Maryland, and Carolina?

B.  What economic activity was most important in the Chesapeake colonies and what societal structures were created?

C.  How did Bacon’s Rebellion highlight the political structure and issues surrounding the Chesapeake colonies?

D.  Why did slaves replace indentured servants in the economy and how did it change the structure of societal relations?

III.  The Middle Colonies

A.  How was the area of New York founded and how did it change economically and politically as a colony?

B.  Why were the Quakers a unique group and what social, political, and economic decisions made the colony successful?

C.  Why did several middle colonies, such as Delaware and New Jersey, break away from other colonies and what does it suggest about the relations between the Middle colonies?

IV.  The French and Spanish Colonies

A.  Where did the French settle and what kind of success did they have economically and socially?

B.  Where did the Spanish settle and what kind of success did they have economically, socially, and militarily?

Analyze the social, political, and economic characteristics of colonies as they moved towards self-government.

Use AP PARTS on both documents and then compare and contrast your findings.

For the Division of Colony that you are assigned (New England, Middle, South, Foreign – France and Spain) do the following:

First, list which colonies are in your region.

Despite the King’s wish to continue salutary neglect, he is willing to send aid to one region of the country that most needs it. Argue for your division getting the aid by doing the following:

1)  Prove that your colonies are the most “religiously moral”

2)  Prove that your colonies are the most politically sound

3)  Prove that your colonies have a good social structure and the king should support that

4)  Explain your strong economic situation and why the king should send aid to help
