Who Has Momentum Going Forward? It’s RIM and Verizon

Overview

This report presents findings from the latest Allianceconsumer survey on cell phones and cellular service providers. The survey was conducted October17- 20, 2006, and a total of 2,640 members participated.

Bottom Line: Verizon (29%) remains the top cellular provider among respondents – unchanged from July 2006, while Cingular (27%) issecond, up 1-pt. Verizon continues to maintain abiglead in customer satisfactionand loyalty. Moreover, Verizon (28%) is the top choice among those likely to switch service providers – up 2-pts since July, while Cingular (14%) remains far behind in second, having declined 3-pts.

Third placein the service providers market goes to Sprint/Nextel (13%; down 1-pt), and in a troublingsign, a quarter (25%) of their respondent customers say they’re likely to switch to another provider – 5-pts more than previously. Moreover, their customer satisfaction has declined 7-pts since July.

Cellular Manufacturers.Motorola (33%) remains the top manufacturer among current cell phone owners–unchanged from July 2006. Nokia (17%) is second, up 1-pt. On the down side, LG (12%) has lost 3-pts since July.

Overall plans for new cell phone purchases are up slightly, with 29% saying they’ll purchase or upgrade in the next 6 months. Once again, Motorola (33%) is the top choice among those planning to buy a cell phone, but it’s down 1-pt since July. In contrast, LG (6%) is up 3-pts and Research in Motion (6%) has gained 1-pt since the previous survey.

Smart Phone Manufacturers. For the fourth consecutive survey, RIM (31%) has gained market share among current smart phone owners – up 1-pt since June. And while Palm (33%) is still the most popular brand among consumer respondents, its share is down 3-pts. Looking at buying plans for the next 90 days, RIM (24%) has leaped into the lead – picking up a huge 13-pts since June, while Palm (23%) is now second, up 3-pts.

Overall, we see a notable increase in dual usage ofsmart phones – 41% say they use their smart phone equally for business and personal use, 13-pts more than in March 2005.

Other Key Findings:

  • Interest in an Apple “iPhone” Grows. A total of 17% say that if Apple were to offer an iPod-type cell phone, they would seriously consider purchasing it for themselves, up 1-pt from July 2006. Another 10% say they would seriously consider purchasing it for other family members, a3-pt increasesince the previous survey.
  • GPS Feature Losing Momentum. A total of 35% say they’re Very or Somewhat Likely to purchase a GPS-enabled cell phone and pay a monthly GPS navigation fee – 6-pts less than in December 2005. Moreover when asked what feature(s) they‘d most like to see integrated into their cell phone, only 11% saidGPS, down from 23% in March 2005.
  • “Triple-Play” Subscriptions are Hot. A total of 11% say they currently pay for a triple-play subscription(a bundling of Internet, Cable TV and Home Phone services). And a huge 16% say it is likely they’ll sign-up for one in the next 90 days.

We asked respondents to name the company providing their triple-play service, and Comcast (27%) was mentioned most frequently followed by Time Warner. Going forward, Comcast (27%) was alsofirst among respondents likely to purchase a triple play subscription, but Verizon shows the mostfuture potential. An astonishing 26% of planned purchasers say they are likely to go with Verizon, 22-pts higher than they have currently.

  • Interest in Verizon FiOS.One-in-five (20%) say they’re Very Likely to sign up for Verizon’s FiOS Internet service if and when it becomes available in their area, 1-pt higher than in July 2006. Another 29% say Somewhat Likely.Regarding Verizon’s FiOS TV service, 16% say they’re Very Likely to sign-up if it becomes available in their area, a 2-pt increase since July. Another 34% say it’s Somewhat Likely, down 3-pts.

Camera Phone Ownership Surpasses Non-Camera Cell Phones. Nearly half (49%) of respondents now say they own a cell phone with a camera, compared with 45% who say they own a cell phone without a camera.

Cell Phone Satisfaction. Motorola (90%) and Nokia (90%) lead in customer satisfaction among the major cell phone manufacturers, each up 1-pt from previously. We note that while overall satisfaction with Palm (88%) remains unchanged since July, its Very Satisfied customer base did increaseby11-pts.

RIM and LG Gain Among Planned Purchasers.Overall plans for new cell phone purchases are up slightly, with 29% saying they’ll purchase or upgrade in the next 6 months. Once again, Motorola (33%) is the top choice among those planning to buy a cell phone, but it’s down 1-pt since July. In contrast, LG (6%) is up 3-pts and Research in Motion (6%) has gained 1-pt since the previous survey.

Additional Cell Phone Features. When we asked respondents what feature(s) they would most like to see integrated into their cell phone, only 11% saidGPS, down from 23% in March 2005. We note that PDA Functionality to Replace PCs (10%) and WiMax/WiFi (1%) also experienced big declines.

On the upside, Internet Functionality (13%) was the top feature respondents would like to see integrated into their cell phones, up 5-pts from previously. Debit/Credit Charge Service (7%) also shows momentum

Cellular Service Market. Verizon (29%) remains the top cellular provider among respondents – unchanged from July 2006. Cingular (27%) is a close second – up 1-pt. Third place in the service providers market goes to Sprint/Nextel (13%; down 1-pt), but that represents their lowest share in more than a year.

Service Provider Satisfaction Ratings. Verizon (93%)continues to maintain its big lead in customer satisfaction – up 2-pts since July. Cingular (86%) is in second, up 1-pt. T-Mobile (85%) has experienced a 4-pt jumpsince July. On the downside, Sprint/Nextel (80%) has declined 7-pts in customer satisfaction since July..

Sprint/Nextel Customer Loyalty Weakening. Overall, 16% of current cell phone owners say they’re likely to switch providers in the next six months, 1-pt more than in July. Verizon (10%) still ranks at the top in terms of customer loyalty. In yet another troubling sign for Sprint/Nextel, a quarter (25%) of their respondent customers say they’re likely to switch to another provider, 5-pts higher than previously.

RIM Gains – Palm Slips. For the fourth consecutive survey, RIM (31%) has gained market share among current smart phone owners – up 1-pt since June. And while Palm (33%) is still the most popular brand among consumer respondents, its share is down 3-pts.
