The Breckinridge County Board of Education met for a special-called meeting on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. local time at the Breckinridge County Board of Education Central Office.

Jon Miller, Principal at Irvington Elementary, Mary Beth Hodge, Principal at Custer Elementary, and Mike Broadbent, Principal at Ben Johnson Elementary, presented to the board reports regarding their respective schools. The reports detailed performance levels in reading, math, attendance, and parent and community involvement.

#251. STUDENT PRESENTATION AND/OR RECOGNITION

The Ben Johnson Elementary STLP group presented a virtual tour of their school.

Superintendent Meeks recognized several students and groups. Regional Governor’s Cup Competition was held on Saturday, March 17th, 2012 at Caneyville Elementary School. Hardinsburg Elementary School placed 1st in Quick Recall and 3rd in Future Problem Solving. The Hardinsburg Quick Recall members included Joey Howell, Alex Burke, Luke Bland, John Douglas Thornhill, Jaylin Pile, Danielle Leach, Madison Thompson, and Noah Dowell. The Hardinsburg Future Problem Solving Team included Jada Critchelow, Isaac Carter, Haley Carman, and Hunter Payne. Custer Elementary School placed 1st in Future Problem Solving. The Custer Future Problem Solving Team included Khaleb Denham, Liz Sipes, Evan Cummings, and Devin Brooks. Irvington Elementary School placed 3rd in Quick Recall and 4th in Future Problem Solving. The Irvington Quick Recall Members included Chance Peterson, Lily Kasey, Dylan Curtsinger, Ashley Malone, Camryn Tipton, Craig Lucas, Kaeveon Mitchell, Justin Winarski, Gavin Dowell, and Garrett Atcher. The Irvington Future Problem Solving Team included Chance Peterson, Lily Kasey, Sarah Hatfield, and Alex Dowell.

The 2012 Governor Scholars were selected and included Ben Allen, Cole Galloway, Kirk Critchelow, Kirk Rhodes, Haley Loughran, and Susan Bailey. In FBLA State Competition, the following students placed:

  • Sarah Massey – 1st Place – Business Procedures
  • Mason Nunley – 4th Place – Technology Concepts
  • Brendan Lucas – 5th Place – Health Care Administration
  • Haley Loughran, Molly Willis & Brooke Kennedy – 5th Place – Management Decision Making

In other recognitions, Shelton Smith, 1st grader at BJES, was the winner of the K-2 48th Annual North Central Kentucky Spelling Bowl. Riley Watson, 4th grader at BJES, was the 1st place winner in the National Breakfast Week Art Contest. His T-shirt design will be sold at SNA’s (School Nutrition Association) Emporium beginning this July at the National Conference in Denver.

#252. HEAD START REPORT

Janet Meeks, Superintendent, presented to the Board on behalf of Mike Simpson, Head Start/Preschool Director, a report stating CLASS observations completed on April 30-May 2. The program also had their Parent Appreciation Banquet on May 3rd. The event was attended by 150 people.

#255. CONSIDERATION AND APPROVAL OF A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING

A CONTRACT RENT AND LEASE WITH THE BRECKINRIDGE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT FINANCE CORPORATION, AND APPROVING ALL OTHER DOCUMENTS IN CONNECTION WITH THE PROPOSED BRECKINRIDGE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT

Moved by Mrs. Burke and seconded by Mrs. Saettel to approve a resolution authorizing a contract rent and lease with the Breckinridge County School District Finance Corporation, and approving all other documents in connection with the proposed Breckinridge County School District Series 2012 bond issue.

#266. DUE TO THE KENTUCKY DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION (KDE) NCLB WAIVER, BRECKINRIDGE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT WILL NO LONGER BE REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE NCLB SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES (SES) AS OF THE 2012-2013

Assistant Superintendent Glenda Dowell presented information regarding the NCLB waiver. She stated that due to the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) NCLB Waiver, Breckinridge County School District will no longer be required to participate in the NCLB Supplemental Educational Services (SES) as of the 2012-13 school year.
