Advisory Committee Meeting Wednesday, September 21st, 2016

Call to Order:

Chairperson Jody Nazarchyk called the meeting to order at 5:33 pm and a quorum was established.

Attendees:

Dani Gorman (YSB Director), Jody Nazarchyk (Chairperson), Dottie Concascia, Ellen Bellos (Vice-Chairperson), Steve Whitehead, Gene Ryan & Chris Gigliotti

Absent:

Dan Steward, Kathy Peterson, Brett Mahoney, Sheila Cash, Justin Barzcak, Michael Buscetto, Ryan McNamara & Lisa Sachatello

Motion #1

D. Concascia made the motion to approve the minutes from May 18, 2016. G. Ryan seconded the motion.

Correspondence:

D. Gorman reported a thank you letter was received from a parent whose child attended Camp D.A.S.H. as well as a thank you letter from the Historical Society for Youth Services participation in Sheep to Shawl.

Program Report:

C. Gigliotti reported after school programs began this week with Fuzzy & Furry Friends on Monday. Next week all programs will be running with Tournament Tuesday and Homework Helpers on Wednesdays. Gigliotti also reported next Saturday October 1st is the 11th annual Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Walk and Youth Services will have a cheering corner at Great Neck & Goshen Road. Saturday Night Out will be held that evening as well. Gigliotti finally reported Youth Services will be a part of the Harvest Day at Waterford Beach on Saturday, October 8th and will have carnival games for children and November 12th will be the bus trip to New York City to see the Rockettes at Radio City.

Student Report:

G. Ryan reported the beginning of the school year is off to a quiet and smooth start. Next week is Spirit Week at the High School with the Homecoming dance on Saturday, October 1st. G. Ryan reported next week the High School will be hosting a program titled Parent Academy consisting of break-out sessions covering school issues, stress and anxiety among other topics.

Director's Report:

D. Gorman reported she is looking for a male and female high school student to appoint as a student representative to the advisory committee. Gorman noted the start of Youth Services new intern Mallory Ozycz from Quinnipiac University. Gorman reported Youth Services will be meeting with Clark Lane and High School guidance counselors this week to discuss upcoming programs and assistance for students this school year. Gorman reported she is working on a prevention grant as well as a grant for a Women and Girls fund. Gorman reported Bud & Sue Bowes of Re-Max on the Bay in Niantic donated $1,000.00 to kick-start the Harvest to Home program which provides fresh produce to referred residents in need. Gorman finally reported Youth Services is revamping the Challenge program which is offered to 5th grade students. The new program, 10-4 will provide 10 lessons to 5th grade and 4 lessons to 4th grade focusing on bullying, social media, drug resistance and more.

WADE Report

C. Gigliotti reported he will be looking into a program or seminar offered to juniors and seniors in high school focusing on abusive relationships and/or drug and alcohol abuse prior to graduation in the spring of 2017.
