Aims of the Learning Programme

Training Programme for: Chair Based Exercise (Level 2)

The aim of the Level 2 – Chair based programme is to provide the student with opportunities to develop the skills and knowledge to plan, lead and evaluate a chair based exercise session. Students will be expected to demonstrate appropriate codes of conduct throughout the programme to reflect those required from a professional chair based exercise instructor in the work place.

Students will learn:

·  Exercise and Fitness Knowledge that relates to chair based instruction and the ageing process

·  Health, safety and professionalism

·  The core 17 chair based exercises

·  How to plan, lead and evaluate a chair based exercise session

·  How to modify chair based sessions to meet specific needs of frail older adults

The learning programme is INTENSIVE and requires full commitment from all students. If you have ANY questions regarding your suitability as a student for this course, you can contact the Training Director who will offer you guidance and support.

Certification

On successful completion of all assessments, the instructor will receive the following certification:

·  CYQ - Award in Chair based exercise for the frailer older adult

Work opportunities

On successful completion of this programme and assessment you will be qualified to deliver chair based exercise to frail older adults. This may include community settings and care homes.

Centre Policies and Procedures

Centre Information Pack

Later Life Training will make available to all students the Centre Information Pack. This will be available on request from all team leaders (tutors, assessors, verifiers). The Centre Information pack will contain up to date copies of specific policies and procedures that relate to all of the areas listed below.

Freedom of Information

The Freedom of Information Act gives everyone the right to access information held by the public sector. Further information can be obtained from: http://www.direct.gov.uk

Students will maintain original copies of all assessed work and assessment paperwork. Later Life Training will retain a copy of the following for each student:

·  Assessment decision and outcome record

·  Assessor feedback record

·  Observation checklist

This paperwork is necessary for Internal and External Verification procedures.

In addition, the following records will be retained:

·  Application form

·  PAR Q

·  GP Referral documentation (when applicable)

·  Informed consent documentation (when applicable)

·  Initial assessment records (when applicable)

·  Special needs requests (when applicable)

·  Records of appeals, complaints, grievances (when applicable)

·  Student and tutor programme and assessment evaluations

Confidentiality

All information will be confidential. No third parties will have access to information gathered/stored without prior consent of the individual. The exception being for verification purposes and/or when there is a legal requirement to produce information. This would include issues that involve any perceived threat of harm to self or others within our community.

Student support and guidance

Later Life Training is committed to providing guidance and support in accordance with specific Award Body Guidelines.

All students will be provided with support and guidance opportunities throughout the learning programme. This will be provided in the following ways:

·  Timetabled sessions (student support)

·  Verbal feedback on practical skill workshops

·  Written feedback on specific practical skill workshops

·  Revision sessions

·  Individual tutorials (on request and to be negotiated with tutor)

·  Additional support for specific needs (on request)

NB: Candidates requiring additional support are advised to contact the Director of Training in advance of their learning programme stating the specific support they require.

Individual Needs

Provision can be made for candidates with reading or writing difficulties provided they notify the centre during the application and enrolment process.

Specific policies include:

Quality Assurance

Later Life Training is committed to maintaining the highest possible standards of resources, training delivery and assessment.

All tutors, assessor and internal Verifiers will be technically competent and qualified to perform the roles for which they are employed.

All resources will be written by industry experts and will be proof read to ensure quality and accuracy of information. Sources of information cited within resources will be appropriately acknowledged and referenced.

Students will be provided with written and verbal guidance on the requirements for their assessment and will be provided with the opportunity to offer feedback on their experience through the course evaluation process.

Accreditation of prior achievement

Students with prior experience, knowledge and qualifications may be able to claim exemption from specific aspects of programme delivery and/or assessment. Details on procedures for making a claim for APA/L are available within the centre information pack.

Fair assessment and appeals Procedure

Later Life Training is committed to providing fair assessment in accordance with guidance offered by the specific awarding body. Our fair assessment and appeals procedure details our procedures.

All students will be assessed against criteria that has been specified and published by the specific Awarding Body.

All Assessors conducting assessments will be qualified and competent in the discipline for which they are assessing. A qualified and competent internal verifier will sample a range of assessment decisions and assessor practices to ensure awarding body standards are maintained

Candidates wishing to appeal against their assessment decision should request the centre appeals procedure guidelines

Referral

Students who refer one or more aspects of the assessment(s) will be provided written and verbal feedback to help them identify the criteria that were not achieved on that occasion. Opportunities to be re-assessed will be provided. Additional charges will be made to conduct additional assessments.

Deferral

Students wishing to defer (postpone) an aspect of their assessment MUST make this requirement known in writing, at least TWO weeks prior to the agreed assessment date. Deferrals made without such notice and without written confirmation will forfeit the assessment fee. ALL students who defer are liable to pay an administration fee and Award Body Fees. If known before day 4 sign up then no fee to pay, as long as the assessment sign up sheet is not completed and your tutor is informed.

NB: Unforeseen circumstances, for example: Absence through illness/injury etc. will require a medical certificate. Administration fees will still be applicable.

Assessment Information and Instructions

Requirements for the Presentation of all Written Work

All written work produced by the student for assessment (formative and summative) must be presented using the following guidelines:

·  Clear and neat presentation in ink (typed is preferred)

·  Student name and date on each page

·  Student signature on first page and initials on all other pages

·  Course information (venue, code and tutor) on each page

·  Diagrams for exercises (in Session Plans) when applicable

·  Pages numbered

·  Easily accessible (Please do NOT use individual plastic folders)

The Assessment Process

Briefing and planning

The methods of assessment and evidence you need to produce will be explained to you on the first day of your programme. These will be reiterated throughout the training programme.

The specific requirements for assessment include:

Unit 1. Internally assessed open book worksheets:

·  Skeletal system and ageing

·  Muscular systems and ageing

·  Cardiovascular system and ageing

·  Nervous system and ageing

Unit 2. Planning, leading and evaluation of a chair based exercise session (60 minutes duration).

Students must include all assessment paperwork within their portfolio:

1.  The Health and Safety plan

2.  Screening and PAR – Q forms for all participants

3.  Lesson plans for all components of a complete session:

·  Warm up. To include: circulation boost 1, mobility, circulation boost 2, stretches

·  Main component. To include: circulation boost 3, strengthening exercises

·  Cool down. To include: circulation lower, pelvic floor strengthening, stretch, relaxation and revitalise

4.  Evaluation form (to be completed after the assessment)

5.  All assessor paperwork (assessment plan and outcome, assessor question and answer record, assessor feedback record, observation checklist)

At the end of the learning programme you will sign and agree the assessment plan to commit yourself to the planned assessment.

Observation and Questioning.

On the day of each practical assessment your assessor will collect and

assess all of your work. They will read your session plans, observe

you delivering the specific practical exercise session and read your written

evaluation of the session. All assessment evidence will be assessed against

the agreed criteria specified on the observation checklist. Copies of all

assessment paperwork will be provided in your assessment file.

Candidates will be required to lead the following:

·  CB 1 and mobility OR CB 2 and stretch

·  2 strengthening exercises

·  Pelvic floor exercises

NB: The assessor will select which components and exercises the student will

lead on the day of the assessment. Observation will be 20-30 minutes

Your assessor may need to ask you questions on different aspects of your

session plans, practical session and self-evaluation. The questions asked will

be written down and your answers will be recorded and agreed and signed by

you and your assessor to state that they are an accurate record of your answers.

Feedback and action planning

You will receive written and verbal feedback regarding the assessment decision. Feedback will provided on all aspects of the assessment and this will be recorded on your feedback report sheet.

Your assessment result will be recorded on your assessment Outcome and Action Plan Summary Sheet, and your assessor will agree an action plan with you detailing the next stage of your professional development.

Quality Assurance and Verification.

You and your assessor will sign and date all your paperwork. Records of your assessment will be maintained for internal and external verification purposes.

Otago Exercise Programme Instructor (OEP) Level 2

Postural Stability Instructor (PSI) Level 4

Continued Professional Development (CPD)

Later Life Training share a wealth of knowledge and will also work in collaboration with other nationally recognised industry experts and international presenters, to provide a comprehensive CPD programme. Details of forthcoming CPD Events will be provided during and after your programme of study and can also be accessed via our website.

Later Life Training is listed as a training provider by the Register of Exercise Professionals.

The role of the Register of Exercise Professionals is to maintain the standards of instruction within the industry.

Attendance and punctuality

Punctuality

Registration for attendance will be at 8:55am. It is requested that students please arrive for 8:55am. Punctuality is an essential professional ethic. Late arrival can disrupt the progress of the lesson and should be avoided. It would not be acceptable or tolerated in the working environment.

Professional commitment and attendance:

100% Attendance is required. Students who are unable to attend any of the days must inform their tutor or the Later Life Training office. Those who are attending with their fees paid must also inform their manager.

When a session is missed, it is the student’s responsibility to catch up with notes etc. The course does not have spare timetabling to enable the tutor to repeat content for those individuals who have missed sessions.

Please Note: Requests for additional tuition due to non-attendance will incur an ADDITIONAL cost to pay for teaching time and room hire to facilitate this requirement. Also note that this would be subject to availability.
