  1. Eligibility
  • only Canadian citizens or permanent residents can apply
  • must be planning to study in Canada
  • must have an A- average over the course of each of the last two years
  • must be entering first or second masters year in September 2010
  • must have been enrolled at Carleton in some capacity during 2009

other recent graduates apply directly to SSHRC before December 14, 2009

  • must have received BA degree since January 2005
  • must be planning to study full-time next year

students with disabilities may study part-time

  • must be pursuing an MA degree in some discipline in the humanities or social sciences
  • Engineering and Science students will automatically be considered for a CGS when they apply for an NSERC award
  • some masters students in health science subjects may be eligible to apply for a CGS-CIHR rather than a CGS-SSHRC

  • Carleton transcripts should be up-to-date official ones (not audits or Banner grades) though “issued to student” transcripts are acceptable
  • if you attended a university that does not issue transcripts, you should obtain an “official certificate of success” which outlines the program in which you were registered, the date of initial registration and the degree sought or obtained
  • transcripts certified as “true copies” of documents in your graduate file can only be submitted if war or revolution has made contact with a given foreign university impossible

Pages 10 and 11 - Letters of Appraisal

  • fill in your name and address
  • give with program of study to each referee listed on page 9
  • ask referee to return completed appraisal to your graduate administrator (not to you) by 6 November

Departmental Appraisal

  • fill in your name, etc.
  • submit with completed application to your graduate administrator

A) Program of Study

  • submit no more than two pages, single-spaced, using Times New Roman12-point with 3/4" margins and putting your name in the upper-right corner
  • provide a well-written, well-structured description of your proposed research program specifying as much as possible the research question, context, objectives and methodology of your project
  • if your program does not include a thesis, research essay or major research project, explain how the research component of your degree will be fulfilled
  • mention also the university at which you intend to study as well as the discipline you will be pursuing
  • feel free to comment briefly on relevant work experience, community service and other extra-curricular activity
  • students in Psychology should justify why they are submitting this application through SSHRC rather than NSERC or CIHR
  • see, as an example, the attached Program of Study recently submitted by a Carleton undergraduate

  • provide a select bibliography for your project and/or full citations for any works mentioned in your Program of Study
