CGC1P: Summative Assignment

Canada is multicultural. A policy of multiculturalism encourages the various cultures and ethnic groups which provide structures and vitality to our society.

Objective: -to appreciate and understand Canada's cultural mosaic

-to appreciate one's heritage

-to use the technology in the library and in the computer lab

The purpose of this assignment is for you to study and research some aspect of population/cultural diversity which is of particular interest to you. You should choose a culture with which you have some familiarity – it would be helpful if you had relatives or friends from this culture, but it’s not necessary.

The Project:

You may present your project either as a written report, as a poster, or as a PowerPoint presentation. However you choose to present your project, you must cover the following elements:

-  Culture: Describe the culture in detail including:

o  food and customs

o  religion

o  sports and recreation

o  language and clothing

-  Push and Pull Factors

o  why this group emigrated from their country of origin

o  why this group chose to immigrate to Canada

-  Settlement patterns

o  where the group originally settled in Canada and the possible reasons why

-  Physical and Social imprints on Canada

o  Physical imprints: the ways in which people affect their surroundings. They include such things as architecture, restaurants, and specialty shops

o  Social imprints: the ways in which people behave. They include such things as customs, language and religion

-  Graphics

o  Include one graph (use Statistics Canada’s E-stat database) showing when people from your country came to Canada. Be sure to explain what this graph is telling you

o  Include maps and pictures to help illustrate your information

The Luncheon:

In addition to your project, you will also be expected to participate in a multicultural luncheon with the rest of the class. On the date assigned, all students are to cook and bring a sample food item reflective of their focus country. Students are not responsible for feeding the whole class lunch, but merely to provide a sample of for the class to share.

Overall Requirements:

¨  Hand in all rough notes (the charts I gave you or ones you created).

¨  You can write in first person

¨  Try and be creative in your thinking and how you present your research

¨  Use your class and research time effectively
