AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ENVIRONMENTAL MEDICINE

Conference Presentation Form

Human Microbiome in Health and Disease

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) is seeking presentations for its upcoming annual meeting to be held at the Westin Hotel in Westminster, Colorado, October 4 – 7, 2018. Presentations should educate and enable practitioners to recognize the potential role of the human microbiome in various disease states, including allergy, autoimmunity, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, and neuropsychiatric illnesses, among many other conditions, and implement evidence-based therapeutic interventions. Your presentation should integrate one of the stated objectives outlined below.

The purposes of this conference are to enable medical practitioners:

1) To understand the emerging science regarding the impact of the microbiome on health and disease

2) To apply Environmental/ Integrative Medicine principles to improve patient outcomes.

STATEMENT OF NEED:

Physicians must possess and maintain a wide-ranging knowledge base regarding a variety of topics covering all body systems as well as common and uncommon disorders. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine’s goal is to educate and enable practitioners to recognize the potential role of the human microbiome in various disease states.

Interest in the role of the microbiome in human health has exploded over the past ten years. An increasing number of studies propose that part of what determines how the human body functions may be not only our genes, but also the genes of the trillions of microbes that live on and in our bodies. Taken collectively, these organisms outnumber our own human cells 10 to 1, making up 5 pounds of our body weight (1). Studies are discovering that our bacteria (or lack of) can be associated with: obesity, malnutrition, heart disease, diabetes, celiac disease, eczema, asthma, multiple sclerosis, colitis, some cancers, autism and potentially in fatty liver disease (1).

With a growing awareness that many of our modern diseases are “lifestyle” related and that greater than 50% of current medications do not work for the individuals taking them, research in the microbiome presents a potential opportunity to provide substantial preventative treatments– with few or no adverse events.

Experts will discuss emerging evidence regarding the microbiome and potential contributions of the microbiota in human health and the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

FOCUS AREA:

The goal of this conference is to present current data regarding the interactions among the immune system, the microbiome, inflammation and the environment. This data should be evidence-based, including laboratory and clinical diagnosis and therapeutic reports.

This conference will acquaint health care professionals with validated alternative methods, so they can provide their patients better-informed advice. The presentations will improve front line-clinicians’ ability to recognize the role of the human microbiome in specific disease states. Practitioners will learn to employ Environmental/ Integrative Medicine methods to improve treatment for the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ENVIRONMENTAL MEDICINE

The focus areas for this conference were developed by the Meeting Planning Committee and the Executive Committee of the AAEM based on feedback from participants in the AAEM 2016 Annual Meeting, data collected from clinicians who completed the AAEM Needs Assessment Survey, literature review and documentation of increased demand for environmental medicine education for health care professionals, as clearly demonstrated by the overwhelming success of the previous conferences.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

The target audience is physicians and other healthcare clinicians who wish to advance their current knowledge of interactions between humans and their microbiome and who wish to stay abreast of advances in medical research.

TIMELINE:
• Monday, September 25, 2017 -- Submission Deadline
• Monday, November 13, 2017 -- Selected session presenters notified
• Monday, August 13, 2018 -- Presentations must be reviewed and approved by the CME

Planning Committee (Email presentation to ). Changes may not be

made to content, presenters, or slides after review.

• October 5 - 7, 2018 -- Live presentations

BEFORE YOU BEGIN:

Authors should keep in mind that all presentations must be evidence- or clinical observation- based, show references/citations, and provide a balanced view of any protocols.

Each diagnostic or treatment presentation must provide “how-to” guidelines that attendees may take home and implement in their practices, unless special training is required – in which case, that information should be provided.

You will need to list three (3) session objectives in your proposal, so please have that information prepared prior to your submission. AAEM’s 2018 Annual Meeting objectives are listed below, and the information submitted in your proposal should address at least 1 of the objectives to help set the stage for AAEM’s 2018 Annual Meeting. Please ensure that your presentation is unique to AAEM’s conference; and is not given to another organization or event at least two (2) months before/after AAEM’s scheduled annual meeting dates (October 5 - 7, 2018).

  1. Recognize the emerging science regarding the impact of the microbiome on health and disease
  2. Explain how lifestyle choices change the nature of the microbiome and the metabolic significance of these changes
  3. Discuss how leading edge novel techniques to restore a healthy microbiome may pave the way for meaningful treatment of autism, autoimmune conditions and inflammatory disorders

PREPARE YOUR INFORMATION BEFORE SUBMITTING:

All information received, especially your abstract and bio, should be proofed for spelling and grammatical errors. Your submission will be reviewed by AAEM’s Planning Committee UNALTERED (typographical errors will not be corrected)
AAEM reserves the right to edit titles and content of your abstract submission. You are required to:

Submit an abstract of your proposed presentation (not to exceed 250 words), including 2-3 references that provide the best evidence underlying your proposed talk.

Submit 3 specific learning objectives for the attendees (e.g., At the end of this presentation participants will be able to....)

Provide a brief biography for EACH Presenter (limited to 250 words written in paragraph format) to be posted on the conference website (do not compose in the first person or list hobbies and/or person family comments).

Provide a digital photo for use in promoting the conference
