Cereal Box Investigation

General Directions:

  1. This project will be in the form of a report. The report will use the flattened cereal box as a folder.
  1. Neatness is very important
  1. Your cereal box folder will include the following ninepages
  • Title page/cover sheet
  • Description of cereal box/introduction
  • Flat net of box labeled with dimensions and area
  • Volume of box
  • Sketch of new design w/ dimensions
  • Circle O’s Logo
  • Surface area of new design
  • Summary of Project
  • Grading Rubric
  1. Model of newly designed box- make sure and decorate

Cereal Box Investigation

The purpose of this project is to examine the surface area and volume of a cereal box. We will be changing a cereal box into either a triangular prism, a rectangular pyramid, or a triangular pyramid, however the volume of the box will still be the same as the original box (within a cubic inch).

  1. Title page/cover sheet: Include title of project, name, teacher’s name, and class period.
  1. Description of cereal box/introduction: Identify the type of cereal box that you will use. Include the length, width, and height of the box, measure in inches to the nearest ¼ inch. Give the weight of the cereal box. Describe the purpose of this project(2-3 sentences). On the same page, draw a model of the cereal box, with the dimensions labeled.
  1. Flat net of box labeled with dimensions: On graph paper, draw a scale model of your opened up, flattened box. Indicate the scale conversion that you used. Label the drawing with the proper dimensions. Also, give the area of each of the rectangular faces of the box on the scale model and the total surface area of the box. Plan carefully before drawing to be certain that the box fits on the paper.
  1. Volume of box: Show your work for how you found the volume of your cereal box. It’s very important that you keep this very neat and that you circle the answer.
  1. Sketch of new design w/ dimensions: Design a cereal box that is either a triangular prism, rectangular pyramid, or a triangular pyramid. Record the volume of your box, which should be within a cubic inch of the original box. Have a drawing of your new design and label the measurements.
  1. Circle O’s Logo: Create a logo for the new Circle O’s box. You may design the logo using your computer or by hand. Youidraw as an app on google drive that you can use called logo creator. The logo must contain a circle and of course the name of the product. Then find the circumference and area of your circle.
  1. Surface Area of new box: Create a net of your new box using graph paper and give the area of each face. Indicate the scale conversion you used. Label the drawing with the proper dimensions. Identify the total surface area.
  1. 1/2 page: Discuss what you learned about math while doing this project. Include what you learned about yourself and projects in general by completing this activity. Describe your “new” design for your cereal box- would manufacturers be interested in your design? Explain. Tell about your most favorite and least favorite part of this project.
