Cereal Box Book Project

1st Quarter

This book project will provide information about you as a reader, your experience with reading the book of your choice, and the information about the book you read. You will be graded on the content, creativity, neatness, and effectiveness of you book project. Please read all the instructions thoroughly.

Materials: Cereal box, scissors, tape or glue, paper or paint to cover your box, crayons/markers/colored pencils.

Instructions:

  • Tape or glue the top and bottom flaps of the cereal box down so that they stay sealed.
  • Wrap the box in paper (like a present) or cover the box in paint
  • Design your box as follows:
  • Front of the box- First, create a name for your cereal (for example, if your books was about a character surviving in the wilderness you might name your cereal “Wilderness Crunch”). Then create an illustration that captures some of the symbolic significance of the story. You may draw or paint your illustration, use pictures you print from your computer or cut out of magazine, glue 3-dimensional objects to your box, or a combination of all three. Finally, include a 2-3 sentence description of the symbolic meaning of your illustration. The “Wilderness Crunch” cereal may have some twigs, leaves, and rocks glued to the front, which symbolize survival because the protagonist used those items to create a fire which allowed her to live through her time lost in the forest.
  • Right side of the box- List at least 5 of the cognitive strategies that you used while reading this book. Next to each cognitive strategy you list explain how you used it. Each item on your list should appear as follows:

Making Connections- When I read this book I was constantly reminded of the time my best friend and I were lost at Disneyland when we were 8 years old. Even though we were not lost in the wilderness, I could relate to the fear that the narrator felt.

  • Left side of the box- Include characterization for each main character. Write 2 indirect examples and 1 direct example down for each character (3 examples total).
  • Back side of the box- First, create a plot chart for the book. Be sure to include all of the main elements (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution). Next, write a 1 paragraph review of the book. Talk about what you liked about the book, what you would change if you could, and who you would recommend the book to.
  • Top of the box-Write the title of the book, the author’s first and last names, the number of pages in the book, how many pages you read, and how many stars you would give the book our of 5 (if you draw 5 stars, it means you think the book is awesome, one start means you think it is terrible).
  • Bottom of box-your name, date, and period number
