Sending Forth and Breaking Open the Word
On Sundays during the Period of the Catechumenate and the Period of Purification and
Enlightenment, the catechumens will be “sent forth” after the homily to “break open the
word.” A catechist will lead them in studying the readings from the Bible proclaimed at mass. They will “feast” on the Word of God while the main assembly celebrates the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

PURIFICATION AND ENLIGHTENMENT
The Scrutinies
During the Mass on the Third, Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent (March 4. 11, 18) we celebrate the Rites of Scrutiny and Exorcism. Even though these rites have strange names, they are actually beautiful prayers for the catechumens. These prayers of Scrutiny and Exorcism are not only for the catechumens, but also for each one of us during Lent. We are asked to scrutinize, or look deeply, into our own hearts and see what needs to be purified. We let the Lord Jesus exorcise us. We let God free us from the evils of sin that exist in our lives. By sharing in these special prayers during Mass, we let our catechumens point the way for all of us to let God enter our hearts and lives more fully, as we prepare for Holy Week and Easter.
