Subject : Mathematics Laboratory at Secondary Level – Request for feedback
Dear Principal,
CBSE introduced the concept of Mathematics Laboratory in Classes IX & X in 2004 with a view that activities help a child to conceptualize better. With wider acceptance and success of the introduction of Mathematics Laboratory, CBSE extended the idea to Primary and Upper Primary classes in 2006 vide Circular No. 14 dated 29.6.2006 listing out a number of activities based on the concepts given in NCERT textbooks of Classes III to VIII.
Before taking further steps, it is proposed to get the feedback on the present scheme. You are, therefore, requested to provide the following information to concerned Regional Office within a week of receipt of this letter:
1. How many experiments are conducted by the students of classes IX & X in your school every year?
2. Of these experiments, how many are new and how many are from the ones suggested in the CBSE Activity Book?
3. What skills are being tested by each of these new experiments?
4. How do these experiments supplement in conceptual understanding?
5. How do the teachers integrate the Math lab activities with class room teaching?
6. Have the teachers tried to use Math lab activities for purposes of evaluation of theory?
Time limit prescribed may be adhered to for further action at our end.
Yours faithfully,
(CHITHRALEKHA GURUMURTHY)
