The Task

Composing music is requires more than simply musical skill, it requires creativity. There are many approaches to developing your creativity and inspiration may come from the most unlikely places. You are encouraged to push your creative boundaries and try things you may not have tried before whether it’s a new genre or simply a different process.

Your task is to create an original composition in any genre. This composition may be submitted as either a written score or an audio recording (or both).

You must also include a paragraph explaining the steps of your creative process.

Assessment Conditions

·  All compositions to be presented as audio, video or written score (handwritten or computer generated).

·  A minimum of 16 bars or approximately 30 seconds in length

·  The composer (you) is not required to perform the composition themselves.

In completing your composition, you should aim to:

·  Demonstrate your ability to manipulate the elements of music, compositional devices

·  Write cohesive music, within a context that relates to a genre

·  Write within the technical capabilities of the sound sources

·  Ensure that the idiomatic conventions relevant to the style are adhered to while demonstrating your own style of composition

·  Demonstrate a balance of contrast, unity and variety


Presentation of Composition

·  Written scores and/or paragraphs should be printed and attached to task sheet. Please include an audio disc of the composition as well if possible.

·  Audio recordings should be presented on CD or DVD Data disc with the audio file being either a WAV file or an mp3.

·  Assignments will not be accepted unless properly labelled as shown (both pages and disc)

·  Assignments will not be accepted unless attached to this task sheet. CD/DVD discs must be in a paper envelope also stapled to the task sheet. Do not staple the envelope closed or in such a way that would prevent the disc from being easily removed. If you cannot remove it yourself, neither can your teacher.

You will be assessed according to the following standards for composing.
