Program and Job Description

The Multicultural Attaché Program is designed to support the diversity efforts of James Madison University and the Center for Multicultural Student Services through the implementation of residential and campus-wide programs and activities in support of creating and maintaining an inclusive campus environment where students can successfully develop academically and socially. In addition, the program offers Attaché staff the opportunity to develop professionally in the areas of leadership, interpersonal, decision-making as well as critical thinking skills and abilities.

The successful candidate will possess a strong interest and desire to promote and discuss issues related to diversity and multiculturalism. Proven organizational skills, event planning and the ability to work in an environment with diverse populations aredesirable. Candidates should have a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average and agree to work the full duration of the program. A mandatory training for this position is scheduled approximately a week prior to fall classes.

Hours:

The program is designed to fulfill approximately 10 hours per week. Some weeks will have more or less than 10 hours depending on program requirements.

Remuneration:

Attachés will be paid a $2,750 stipend, according to dates established by the program supervisor from August2013– April2014.

Mandatory Participation:

  • Multicultural Attaché Training(CMSS will assist with on-campus housing, meals and other additional costsassociated with training attendance)
  • Freshmen Move-in
  • Various programs and activities coordinated by the Orientation Office
  • Various events coordinated by the Office of Admissions (i.e. Prospective Students Weekend, Choices, etc.)
  • Various programs and activities coordinated by CMSS

Responsibilities and Duties:

Professionalism

  • Maintain a professional attitude and persona at all times, whether working on or off campus.

Programming

  • Create and facilitate residential and campus-wide programming in collaboration with internal and external constituents.
  • Support CMSS programming by providing assistance as needed.

Community Development

  • Create and implement residential community building activities in collaboration with other Attaché(s).

Develop a rapport and maintain consistent communication with students in assigned residence hall.

  • Develop a positive working relationship with Residence Life and CMSS staff as well as your fellow Attachés.
  • Maintain a bulletin board in assigned residence hall with information designed to increase the visibility of the Multicultural Attaché Program, CMSS and campus-wide programs and services.

Administration

Attend mandatory training session.

  • Establish CMSS and resident hall weekly office hours (4 hours/week)

Attend bi-weekly Attaché staff and one-on-one meetings with program supervisor.

  • Assist with staff activities as directed by the program supervisor.
  • Assist with various administrative tasks and assignments as outlined by the program supervisor or CMSS staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Strong event planning skills.
  • Limited extracurricular activities that conflict with performing the duties and responsibilities of the program.
