Dear South Side School Families,

Over the next seven weeks we are celebrating our annual One School, One Book initiative. This year’s book is entitled, Super, the second installment in Matthew Cody’s trilogy. Your children have been read aloud Powerless, the first of the series, and are excited to continue the adventure with you at home!

Today the oldest member of each family was given a book and a packet containing this parent letter and the calendar of chapters and events. This will be a helpful tool to keep you and your family on track. As always we are inviting every family to read this book together at night. You also have the ability to hear each chapter read aloud with our audio version found online on our school’s website. Also be on the lookout for upcoming details on our upcoming celebration.

Over the years we’ve had such great success with this awesome program! This worthwhile initiative engages students of all ages and ability levels. It is a great book that can be understood and enjoyed by all of our students, parents and staff! It also ties into our year long theme of what it means to be a true hero.

Each morning in school, students will be asked to answer daily trivia questions to encourage and reward active participants. You will soon find that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. In class, there may be various activities and explorations of the book. We recommend that you try your best to keep up with the nightly readings so your child will feel confident and comfortable participating, and remember your enthusiasm will be contagious.

Reading aloud at home is hugely valuable because it better prepares your child to be an independent, critical reader and thinker. This rewarding experience brings families together even for just a few minutes each night. With this educational family activity we aim to build a community of readers here at South Side School.

Happy Reading and save the date…
