Cell“City”AnalogiesPosterProject

This project is due on . NO EXEPTIONS!

The cell is the basic unit of structure and function for all living things, and it possesses all of the characteristics of life. Each component of a cell has a specific function that is necessary for the successful operation of that cell. It can be compared to a city or community, with each organelle important to the operation of the entire community. In this activity, you must make an analogy between the parts of a cell and the parts of a city, theme park, school, or other creative location (use your imagination!). Each part of your city must correspond to a part of the cell based upon the function of that organelle.

Directions:

  1. Use directions page to login to teacher webpage and obtain your groups login and then change your password. Write down your login here: ______
Write down your new password here: ______
  2. Start a new glog and add your names at the top.
  3. Add an image of a plant or animal cell to the center of your glog. The following structures may be included: cell wall, chloroplasts, chromosomes (DNA), cilia, cytoplasm, flagella, mitochondria, nucleus, cell membrane, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi body, lysosomes, and vacuoles, or any others from your cell chart.
  4. As part of your Glog Title, correctly identify your cell as a plant or animal cell(for example, a good title might be… “An animal cell is like a city”, or “Plant Cell-opolis”)
  5. Locate and imbed pictures (or clip art) of everyday objects that have a similar function (or use) as each cell structure you use. Try to position the image close to the actual cell structure on your picture of a cell (if the cell structure is actually present in your picture).
  6. Write your analogy in a textbox beside the image (make sure it is readable) Your analogies must follow EXACTLY the samples below for credit!
  7. At the end of each class (and periodically during class) make sure to save your work.
  8. Using glogster directions, save and publish your glog when finished.

Examples:

  • The nucleus is like a city hallbecause it controls and coordinates activities of the city, just like the nucleus controls the activities of a cell.
  • The mitochondrion is like a power plant because it provides energy for the just like the mitochondrion provides energy for cell activities.

Possible Analogies for a City:

City Hall / Construction Site / Security Gates
Storage Facility / Power plant / UPS
City dump/ Waste Disposal / Wall around the City / Highway or Subway Tunnels
Assembly Line / Filing Cabinet / Garden

Needs changing!!!!!!!!!!

Grading policy:

A – 36-40: 9 or more cell structures/ analogies

Neat, complete (all cell structures identified, cell identified, all analogies correct and explained, all organelle functions listed on the back)

B – 32-35:7-8 cell structures/analogies

Neat, complete (all cell structures identified, cell identified, all analogies correct and explained, all organelle functions listed on back)

C – 28-31: 6-5 cell structures/analogies

Fairly neat, mostly complete (most cell structures identified, cell may or may not be identified, most analogies correct and explained, organelle functions may or may not be listed on the back)

D – 24-27:3-4 cell structures /analogies

Messy, incomplete (some cell structures may be identified, cell may or may not be identified, some analogies correct and explained, organelle functions may or may not be listed on back)

F – 1-23: 0-2 cell structures/analogies

Messy, incomplete(some cell structures may be identified, cell may or may not be identified, some analogies correct and explained, organelle functions may or may not be listed on back)

0-no collage turned in will result in 0 points.
