CELL AWARDS REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNAL ASSESSORS

CELL Awards requires all internal assessors to hold the following qualifications and experience:

  • An approved qualification in the subjects that they are teaching/assessing
  • Units A1 and A2 or unit D32 and or D33 or the equivalent.

Please note that new assessors must have a clear action plan for gaining the appropriate qualifications listed above. Where they may be called upon to assess while still uncertified, their assessment decisions must be supported by an assessor or verifier who has achieved the necessary certification.

Where the assessor is new, a qualified assessor or the internal moderator/verifier must agree the assessment decisions.

Where the centre has more than one group of candidates training for the same qualification an internal verifier/moderator must be appointed to moderate standards across the centre.

The Role of the Assessor

Your role is to:

  • Ensure that candidates have a copy of the qualification and criteria against which they are being assessed and are clear what these entail.
  • Ensure that the assignment tasks set provide the necessary opportunities to enable the candidate to meet the assessment requirements.
  • Ensure that candidates understand the nature and type of acceptable evidence, what is to be assessed and how this is to be done.
  • Ensure that the conditions and resources required for assessment are available including the accurate recording of candidate’s achievements.
  • Ensure that all assessments used conform to CELL Awards requirements and have been agreed with the External Inspector.
  • Where appropriate observe and record candidates carrying out activities described in the relevant assessment.
  • Where appropriate assess the candidates own work against the relevant assessment criteria.
  • Where appropriate to question candidates and record results.
  • Assist candidatesin the understanding of subject matter and presentation of evidence, allowing the redrafting of work once before submission.
  • Authenticate the evidence provided by the candidates.
  • Judge the evidence provided and make appropriate assessment decisions.
  • Identify gaps in candidates competence or areas where the candidate has not met the minimum level laid down in the assessment criteria.
  • Provide feedback to candidates through a medium provided by or approved by CELL Awards.
  • Record and sign to confirm and authenticate achievement on forms provided by CELL Awards. See CELL Awards Quality Manual Annex F.

The Candidates Role

The assessor is expected to ensure that the candidate is aware of their role in the assessment process this will entail:

  • Preparing for assessment, becoming familiar with the appropriate standards, syllabus and assessment criteria.
  • Being aware of what is to be assessed and how it is to be assessed.
  • Helping to identify sources of evidence.
  • Carrying out activities, producing work, answering questions, completing assessments and assignments.
  • Gathering and presenting evidence.
  • Receiving and acting on feedback from the assessor.

Please note that new moderator/verifiers must have a clear action plan for gaining the appropriate qualifications listed above. Where the moderator/verifier is new, a qualified moderator/verifier must agree the decisions.

The Role of the Moderator/Verifier

The role of the internal moderator/verifier is to:

  • Ensure consistency of assessment across a range of CELL Awards programmes being delivered within the Centre.
  • Ensure that the methods used for assessment are fit for purpose.
  • Ensure that evidence supplied by candidates is assessed fairly, consistently and accurately.
  • CELL Awards requires that 20% of each unit is sampled and verified/moderated.
  • CELL Awards requires that 20% of the assessed work of each assessor, (the assessed work must be from a range of candidates), is sampled and verified.
  • Ensure that results are recorded accurately and sent to CELL Awards on the approved documentation in a timely manner.
