MCLOUD ELEMENTARY NEWS!

1ST Quarter Newsletter/October 2015

Mrs. Gina Scroggins, Principal

Celebrating Family and Community Involvement!

Thank you parents, grandparents, guardians, and patrons for making grandparents day and parent-teacher conferences a huge success! Your involvement in your child or grandchild’s education is instrumental to them being successful in school. We appreciate having that home-school connection with you and welcome your input any time!

Principal’s Corner

What a great first nine weeks we have had at the Elementary! Our students have been hard at work as well as our teachers. Our new teachers are taking part in LTRS training (how we learn to read through brain research). Our teachers have also attended training in autism. We continually strive to grow in our profession in order to teach our students with the most current research/ evidenced based strategies. We are always looking for ways to improve in our curriculum and instruction. Students in 3rd and 4th grades received new Science curriculum and I’m sure you’ve heard about S.T.E.M. We have generated a lot of excitement for learning and will continue to do so!!

October events are upon us…please see important events located on the monthly events calendar coming home in your child’s Tuesday folder each month.

Tuesday Folders go home every Tuesday. Please review your child’s papers, ensure homework is completed, sign folder and return to school with your child.

Student Agenda-please ensure your child’s agenda is coming home every night. A list of assignments should be written daily to keep your child on track and you aware of daily assignments and upcoming tests. Communication between home and school is critical in your child’s success. Please communicate with your child’s teacher often and we look forward to seeing you at the September Parent-Teacher Conferences. The RSA Law will be discussed during conferences for third grade students. We need all parents/guardians present.

Visitors- pleasevisit the Elementary Office and get a badge to enter any building. Regardless if the office staff knows you, you must have a visitor badge to access our buildings/halls, cafeteria, playground, etc. This is our policy and it is for the safety of all of our students and staff. If you want to pick up your child and not be required to get a badge, call for an early check out. In this case we will have your child brought to the office for your arrival.

PreKindergarten Parents, Grandparents, Guardians, Childcare,

We prefer you drop your child off in the car rider line rather than walking them to class. If you insist on walking your child to class, you must check in at the office and get a visitor badge. Please understand you will not be granted access to the building otherwise. Safety for our students first! Thank you for understanding.

Read for Education Fundraiser Kick off October 13th

We are starting a new fundraiser called “Read for Education”. This fundraiser is simple! It requires no selling on the part of you or your child! By simply completing the postcards with complete addresses your child can win a prize. If your child returns all 11 postcards filled out completely, they will receive a glow in the dark watch that keeps time and a cool bracelet, but that is not all… they also get a chance to enter into a drawing for a chance to win an inflatable remote control robot as well as a cash prize of 10,000 dollars if their name is drawn nationwide. If your child’s name is drawn in the nationwide drawing, not only do they receive a large cash prize, but the school also receives 100,000 dollars and your child’s teacher receives 5,000 dollars. There is no obligation to buy anything from this fundraiser, however, our school will receive $5.50 for every booklet that is returned with complete addresses. This equates to approximately 2,400 dollars if everyone participated. Fall break is a good time to sit down by the fire and address postcards to family and friends! They will enjoy hearing from your child. Again, there is no obligation to buy anything, but we get $$$ and your child gets some cool prizes just for returning the postcards. We hope you will support this endeavor and take a few minutes to participate in this very worthy cause to put fun and exciting materials and equipment into your child’s classroom. Last year we earned 428.00

Gifted and Talented

I have been enjoying meeting and working with the students. We are in the process of scheduling lessons, projects, academic bowls and field trips that will challenge our way of thinking. Currently, we are working on making a planet that must have a land base and liquid; in which, students must also create a living life form for the planet. They will write a small description of the planet and life form and also create a model of the planet. There has already been some great creativity! Another great project we were able to do, from a gracious program that the Oklahoma History Museum has provided, is we were able to go through a trunk that provided us items to make and record our own radio show. The students came in to a variety of household items one finds in the garage. They had a blast figuring out they could make horse galloping sounds with two plungers or make a telephone ring with a horseshoe and brass ring. We will be enjoying more trunks in the future.

S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)

Mcloud Public Schools are an integral part of leading public education down an extremely impactful path. This year Mcloud has started a STEM class for kindergarten through sixth grade. We are one of three schools in Pottawatomie County that have a STEM class for this age group. STEM is not a foreign concept to education but it is a new emphasized blend of highly associated subjects. It is actually an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Research shows this class can have an amazing impact on both academic and life skills. It integrates the four chief subjects, in a hands-on classroom, so well that students learn effortlessly. Skills like problem solving, team work, adaptation, modification, rationalizing, evaluating, and predicting are just an everyday by product of this fun problem-based classroom. Answers and concepts are not given in this non-traditional classroom, but they are organically discovered by the student. Once the student understands the concept and is able to navigate it, then the technical terms are introduced by the teacher. This method of teaching allows the student to learn like they have naturally their entire lives; much like a child discovering that cake is delicious and then later learning that the brown awesome part was called chocolate. Talk to your kids and ask them about what they are doing in STEM class. You will hear that this class is making learning delicious.

Pre-K students will be attending their very first field trip this month. We will be attending Sunshine Shelly’s Pumpkin Patch on Tuesday, October 13th. They are very excited to ride a bus as a class. On October 30th , we will be going on our annual Candy Walk through the town of McLoud. We can’t wait to see what friendly costumes they will be wearing to school that day. We are also continuing working on numbers 1-5. We will be introducing the letters A, N, M and I. The students are perfecting their routines and really starting to get the hang of things around school. It is so fun to watch them grow.

In Mrs. Norwood’s room, we are starting our Habitats unit. We have also started our Student of the Week. Every Student of the Week will also get to participate in Show-N-Tell that week.

Third grade students have been reading about a variety of topics and are practicing very important skills! We enjoyed the first unit in the reading series because it was all about money! This week, we learned about emperor penguins. Skills that we are practicing are words in context, prefixes and suffixes, using resource materials, alphabetizing, and using guide words in glossaries, dictionaries, and encyclopedias. We are working hard to make our AR goals! We are also using the computers to practice with various reading skills programs.

During the first six weeks of school, our Third graders have been learning and working on a multitude of Math skills. First and foremost, we have been reviewing basic addition and subtractions facts. We are starting to practice multiplication facts as well. Our third graders have been learning how to read, interpret, and construct a variety of different types of graphs. These include bar, line, pie, and pictographs. We have been working on place value through one thousand and then rounding those numbers in order to add or subtract them. Our classes utilize a variety of learning techniques that help keep our students engaged while having fun learning. We use IXL, Study Island, and Accelerated Math to help reinforce these skills.

In 4th Grade reading, we are currently reading the novel Chocolate Fever with exciting and engaging chocolate activities to go along with the book and that correlates with our reading skills. Please remember to have your student study their vocabulary words. Since, school has begun we have covered poetry, historical fiction, and realistic fiction. The children really enjoyed showing off their timelines and eating pie on PIE day (Persuade; inform; entertain). Continued…

Math Is MAGIC

MAGIC describes fourth grade

math. For the First Quarter, we have been mastering place

value to 100,000 along with data

analysis using graphs, charts and

tallies. We have deepened our knowledge of math patterns. Multiplication, Multiplication, Multiplication!!! has been stressed with memorization of math facts in preparation for second quarter math skills.
