Cedefop invites applications for the drawing up of a reserve list for the position of:

The european centre for the development of vocational training (Cedefop) is an Agency of the European Union. It supports the European institutions, the governments of Member States and the social partners – employers’ representatives and unions – in the development of initial and continuing vocational training. Cedefop has approximately 130 staff and is based in Thessaloniki, northern Greece. For more information on the Agency, see .

The Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Department provides the ICT infrastructure, and a wide range of services and applications for the needs of the Centre, its staff and its projectsin two locations (Thessaloniki, Brussels).

Responsibilities and tasks

Within Administration, and under the supervision of the Head of Information and Communication Technologies Department, the successful candidate will carry out the following tasks:

  • Analysis, design, development and maintenance of client applications in PowerBuilder;
  • Database development (mainly Sybase ASE 12.5 database server);
  • Development anddeployment of information systems and vertical applications,with emphasis to financial and administrativeneeds, within the IS architecture used in Cedefop;
  • Application testing, validation and integration;
  • Technical reporting and documentation, in English;
  • First and second level support to Cedefop’s existing information systems;
  • ICT staff backup: complement and act as backup of Cedefop’s ICT staff in other ICT fields as required.

Formal Requirements

  • Be a national of one of the EU Member States;
  • Have a level of post-secondary education attested by a diploma, or a level of secondary education attested by a diploma giving access to post-secondary education and appropriate professional experience of at least 3 years;
  • Have a thorough knowledge of one of the languages of the Communities and satisfactory knowledge of another language of the Communities;
  • Enjoy full rights as a citizen;
  • Have fulfilled any obligations imposed by the laws on military service.

Prospective applicants will be assessed against the following criteria

  • Provenexperience with developing client applications with PowerBuilder version 7 and above;
  • Proven experience of relational database development in Sybase ASE ;
  • Knowledge and experience of basic database management tasks;
  • Good communication skills in English (oral and written);
  • Capacity to draft technical documentation in English;
  • Sound analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new skills and adapt to changing environments;
  • Service mindedness;
  • Good interpersonal skills, confidentiality and discretion.

The following characteristics will be considered as additional assets

  • A recognised university degree in computer engineering, computer science, informatics or related field;
  • Knowledge of other relational databases (MS SQL Server, Oracle);
  • Knowledge of Information Systems development life cycle;
  • Solid understandingof web development technologies (.net/ASP, jsp/J2EE, php, Javascript, XML);
  • Good grasp of public accounting and administrative processes;
  • Knowledge of another EU language, preferablyGreek or French;
  • Experience of multicultural and multilingual environment.

reserve list

A reserve list will be drawn up by Cedefop. The list will be used as a reserve for recruitment, should vacancies arise. It will be valid until 30/06/2007 and may be extended.

Contractual conditions

The initial contract will be for a duration of 2 years with the possibility of renewal.

The terms of employment are those described in the Conditions of Employment of Other Servants of the European Communities (cf. articles 79 to 119 referring to contract staff).

The basic monthly salary of a contract agent in Function group III (grade 8, step 1) before any deductions or allowances is approximately € 2.215.

The grade will be determined in the light of the successful applicant’s experience and qualifications.

Recruitment will take place under the condition that corresponding budget appropriations are available.

For reasons related to the Agency’s operational requirements, the candidate will be required to be available at a short notice.

The place of employment is Thessaloniki, where Cedefop has its official seat.
