Anniversary Report -2006-07

Another blossomed day for the children of seven Asha Schools run by CDDP. On 30th of January 2007, All of them assembled at Nedumbaram CDDP campus to celebrate the anniversary. It was coincidental that it was also a day for remembering Gandhi’s death anniversary. Children from the schools of Arungulam Nallattur, Nemili, VGK puram, Chivvada and Karnai Nizampattu were brought in special vehicles to Nedumbaram. Children of NedumbaramSchool also joined with them. Already sports competitions were held at the schoollevel and the inter schoolcompetitions were held during the Anniversary. In the musical chair competition, the children were split into six groups – above 9th Std– girls and boys separate, 6-8 standards, girls and boys separate, below 5 –girls and boys separate.

Special lunch with varieties of vegetarian items was served to the children.

Afternoon programme was started with the prayer “Anbe Thieyvam”

There was a competition in Thirukkural –popular Tamil epic containing 1330 couplet verses depicting the various important facets of man’s life. Last year it was on Mahakavi Subramaniya Bharathi’s songs. The competition was conducted separately for above 9thchildren, 6-8 children and below 5th children. Each school children performed a cultural event.

Welcome dance was performed by the children of VGK puram school. The teachers also sang a song on mother and with Thirukkural couplets. Each school children performed a drama depicting one teaching from a kural.

We have a special guest for the prize distribution functionMs. Meredith from Global Giving,Washington.,DC,USA. She blessed the children and distributed the prizes. Along with her, we had Mr. Sankaranaranan and his wife both from Udhavaum karangal , a voluntary organization from Chennai. Mr. Mohan and Mr.Arun, educationists were also present to give their blessings. Mr. Muralidaran, Asha volunteer from Chennai could not attend due to last minute engagements. All officials and staff of CDDP were also present.

Education tour

This year, it was totally a different experience for the children. First time in their life they were able to see inside ship and submarines. As this is the 125th year of celebrations for the Chennai port trust, it was opened for children freely for some days. With special permission, we had arranged the trip on 21st of January 2007. All the children were brought in special contract buses to the port trust, and they were taken in batches to the ship. The mighty ships could give them amazing feeling and they were thrilled to know about the operation and functioning of the ship. They could see a submarine operating. By the side, they visited the beach. They also visited the big Museum of Chennai Egmore where they could see various types and models of human and animal species, sculptures of different metal and stones etc. Materials belonging to different periods were an education to them. They also visited the children’s park where they could see different birds and snakes. They considered it as one of the happiest days in their life. After they came from their educational trip theywereasked to write an essay on their trip. They could recollect and each one could make it in their own style. Photos are attached separately.
