CCSF journalism students selected for summer mentorship program

Three City College journalism students were selected for the 2017 Bay News Rising mentorship program sponsored by Pacific Media Workers Guild. The students are Guardsman Editor-In-Chief Bethaney Lee, Photo Editor Gabriela Reni, and reporter Victor Tence. The summer program runs from May 30 to mid-July. It will assist students to practice reporting through coverage of economic disparity issues, as well as the ongoing struggles of labor unions and women’s rights in the broader context of social justice in the Bay Area. There also will be opportunities for breaking, investigative and feature style news, as well as opportunities to practice multimedia and social media journalism.

Former CCSF journalism student secures KQED radio internship

Former CCSF journalism student and Guardsman Online Editor Patrick Fitzgerald accepted a paid summer internship with KQED Public Radio’s Forum with Dr. Michael Krasny. Forum is a news and public affairs program that focuses on the arts, culture, health, business, and technology. It is one of KQED’s most-popular shows and one of the most listened to locally produced public radio programs in the nation. The internship will provide an in-depth experience with National Public Radio and the broadcast communications industry. Fitzgerald also just completed an editorial internship as a writer for Sierra magazine, a nationally-circulated publication of the Sierra Club in Oakland, Calif. Previous to Sierra magazine, he was a news intern with The San Francisco Examiner newspaper where he covered local developments in the City of San Francisco. Fitzgerald earned his associates degree in journalism with a certificate in broadcasting in 2016.

California Publishers Honor CCSF journalism students

City College journalism students captured three awards in state competition sponsored by the California Newspaper Publishers Association. Marco Siler-Gonzales, David Horowitz, and Cassandra Ordonio took first place honors in Enterprise News Story/Series for a series of articles on the college’s maintenance problems. Honorable Mention went to Shannon Cole for Sports Game Story. The Guardsman Online also picked-up Honorable Mention Honors.

CCSF journalism students capture seven CCMA awards

CCSF journalism students continued their winning ways by capturing seven awards in the 2017 California College Media Association competition. The Guardsman’s Gaabriela Angotti-Jones took First Place for Best Photo Series, The Guardsman staff won Second Place for Best Newspaper, Bethaney Lee won Third Place for Best Arts & Entertainment Story, and The Guardsman took Third Place for Overall Newspaper Design. In addition, Etc. Magazine designer Mathew Patton captured First Place in Best Inside Page/Spread Design, Etc. Magazine earned Third Place honors for Best Magazine, and Steve Newman received an Honorable Mention award for Best Magazine Story.

Former Guardsman Photo Editor Gets Full Photo Scholarship

Former Guardsman Photo Editor Nathaniel Downes was awarded a full scholarship to attend a visual storytelling workshop with noted documentary photographer Danny Wilcox Frazier. The workshop takes place at the Leica Akademie in San Francisco from June 6-10.

Guardsman staffer is U.C. Berkeley bound

Guardsman Arts Editor John Ortilla is accepted into the communications arts program at U.C. Berkeley. Ortilla will enter the program in the fall semester with plans to advance into the university’s graduate program in journalism.

New York Times Institute welcomes former CCSF journalism student

Former Guardsman photographer Gabriella Angotti-Jones is participating in a summer internship with the New York Times Journalism Institute. The internship will run through the end of the year.

Former CCSF journalism student to do back-to-back internships

Former Guardsman news editor Audrey Garces will be interning at the San Francisco Examiner during the summer. Upon completion, she will begin a fall internship with KQED radio in their news department.

City College hosts annual High School Journalism Boot Camps

Some 50 high school journalism students attended the 2017 High School Journalism Boot Camp held at City College on May 13. The Department of Journalism and the San Francisco/Peninsula Press Club co-sponsored the one-day annual event that include 12 workshops led by professional journalists. The day’s activities also included the announcement of journalism awards and scholarships.

Chronicle Copy Chief Provides Career Tips

CCSF journalism students were treated to a talk on May 16 by San Francisco Features Desk Copy Chief Andrea Behr on the challenges of being a newspaper copy editor. The one-hour talk also focused on how to prepare for career opportunities in copy editing.
