Background to the Bereavement Service

CCIWBS began as a small service in 1969 with only 6 counsellors and has expanded very considerably. It was incorporated as a Charity in 1998. The current 55counsellors working in a voluntary capacity, see2-3 clients each per week and work from 5 counselling rooms in Kentish Town, Camden. Counsellors are supported by 10 Assessors (including 8 volunteers) 6 paid clinical Supervisors (sessional) and 4 office staff, all part time which gives 3 paid full time equivalents plus volunteer help. There is CPD training twice a yearprovided by the service.

The Service provides 5-6000 hours counselling per year and currentlyprovides mostly short term counselling. This change began 3 years ago at the request of commissioners although we do provide some longer termtherapy. We also have a low-cost service for out of Borough clients. We offer group work, loss counselling and pre bereavement counselling. We see many clients from deprived backgrounds, often with complicated personal & clinical histories and many experiencing complex grief. Thus up to a third of our clients have pre-existing mental health conditions or a history of substance abuse. The number of traumatic cases such as suicide, murder and accidents have increased greatly over recent years.

Our host borough is Camden and we have a contract with Camden Borough & the Clinical Commissioning Group (“CCG”) through the lead provider, Camden Mental Health Trust Psychological Services. We have a similar contract with Islington Borough/ CCG.We take clients from all over London through our contributions based service.

The Service receives no government funding and its income therefore comes from the 2contracts with Borough/NHS commissioners plus individual and Trust Donations, Fundraising and some client contributions.

The service is managed by the Director, Vybra Morris, supported by 3 administrators. All staff report to the director. The board of trustees currently has 9 members who meet 6 times per year and communicate very regularly. Some of our Trustees and staff have been with the Service for over 20 years. Trustees come from a wide range of backgrounds and 3 are also volunteer counsellors.
