Job Title: Counselor

Job Summary:This position provides counseling services to individuals (adults and children), couples, families and groups. The counselor also provides education and consultation services to local church and/or community groups, as needed.

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Exempt employees are paid on a salary basis, based on the duties performed in a position, rather than by the hours worked. Counselors are expected to be flexible with their schedules to meet the scheduling needs of their clients.

Location: Mason City, Iowa

JOB DUTIES/TASKS:

CLINICAL

  • Provides individual (including adults and children), couple, family and group therapy in office or school based settings.
  • Provide evaluation services including clinical assessment and diagnosis consistent with current DSM.
  • Develop treatment and discharge plans with the client.
  • Implement interventions based on diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • Provides in-person and phone crisis pregnancy counseling services.
  • Provides phone counseling for Project Rachel program for individuals struggling with after effects of an abortion.
  • Sixty-six percent (66%) of time is expected to be in direct service.

ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Utilizing Vision Works, our medical records database, schedule/reschedule clients for appointments (may be also supported by administrative assistant).
  • Maintain all case documentation in Vision Works within timely manner, in accordance with all applicable policies, law and instructions.
  • Set fees for services with clients, and responsible for collecting all sliding fee payments, insurance co-payments and deductibles at time of service.
  • Ensure active client’s insurance information is updated annually and updates provided to billing specialist.
  • Work closely with billing specialist to problem solve insurance payment coding errors or necessary updates to ensure timely receipt of insurance payments.
  • Accurately documents and prepares weekly/monthly statistical and accounting reports in a timely manner.
  • Answers phones/greets visitors and clients in absence of other staff.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

  • Provides education and consultation to parishes, schools and other community partners, as needed/requested.
  • Participates and assists, where appropriate, in local human services planning and development.
  • Participates at health fairs/conventions, other appropriate community events.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology from an accredited university or college.
  • Licensed by state as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), Licensed Social Worker (LSW) or Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW), or a Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) preferred. Will consider temporary licensed candidates.
  • Minimum of three years post-graduate direct service in treatment programs.
  • Have reliable transportation and be willing to travel to other offices, schools and other settings, as needs dictate; business related travel will be reimbursed
  • Be an active, baptized member of a Christian faith.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the ethical considerations, including HIPAA, involved in clinical/social work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, clients, family members, the public, church officials, and representatives of other agencies.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of methods, principles, practices and clinical/social work techniques, group work, client-centered advocacy, community organization, research and other clinical skills as they apply to target population.
  • Strong knowledge of available community resources.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; experience and comfort with being a public advocate and spokesperson.
  • Develops personal professional growth plan and demonstrates professional ethics and leadership.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English; Bilingual candidates preferred.
  • Possess a strong commitment to Catholic Social Teachings.
