Winchester Cathedral

Cathedral Chaplain (Minor Canon)

MISSION STATEMENT

Vision

Our Vision is ‘to discover and live out the beauty of holiness’.

Mission

Winchester Cathedral, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, seeks in its life to reflect the dynamic love of God revealed in Christ, through being both a servant of others in their journey of faith, and of the world in its search for meaning and inspiration, reconciliation and wholeness.

Purpose

  • To be a community worship, witness and welcome with Benedictine priorities.
  • To witness beyond the life of the Cathedral to the universal identity of the church.
  • To be a sign of the Kingdom to which God is calling through commitment to justice, the integrity of creation and healing in and between people.
  • To release and enable, with a caring, learning environment, the gifts of all members of the Cathedral community: lay and ordained, staff, volunteers and members of the worshipping community.
  • To work for collaboration, cooperation and effective communication at all levels of Cathedral life and beyond.
  • To conserve and develop the beauty of the buildings, contents and estates within our care.
  • To thrive and not just survive.

The Role

The Dean and Chapter of Winchester Cathedral are seeking to appoint a Cathedral Chaplain who will work as part of the Ministerial Team which comprises:

  • Dean (who by Constitution must ‘secure the pastoral care of all members of the Cathedral community’)
  • Cathedral Residential Canons
  • Cathedral Curate
  • Canons who undertake residence on a voluntary basis
  • Licensed Lay Ministers

The main responsibilities will be the support and growth of the Cathedral community through the provision of pastoral care and faith development.

Wider Ministerial Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be a member of the Ministerial Team and will attend the regular Ministerial Team meeting as well as the Jelly Lunch (of Volunteer Heads of Section).

The collegiate nature of the Ministerial Team offers the theological stimulus, spiritual support and warm friendship. Regular prayer, theological study and fellowship are key elements of our life together.

Residency is the responsibility of the Dean and three Residentiary Canons and apportioned by the week. In practice this is shared with others, including the Cathedral Chaplain as a Minor Canon.

There is a Chapter aspiration to champion chaplaincy in different sectors and to provide a Cathedral focus and support for other forms of chaplaincy, e.g. Anna Chaplaincy. This gives the Cathedral Chaplain the opportunity for serving the wider Diocese and bringing good practice to the Cathedral.
