Week 4 / Focus Question: Do all solids dissolve in water??
Assured Experience: Have students try to dissolve sugar or salt in one clear plastic cup and another cornstarch. They observe the sugar or salt dissolving or forming a solution and the cornstarch settling to the bottom – not dissolving or forming a mixture. (settled material is called sediment) . Have student fill out a table of solutions/mixtures while trying to dissolve other substances such as pepper, baking soda, powered sugar, br. Sugar, cinnamon, flour, baking powder, baby powder and soap powder. Be sure student wear goggles.
