The Contractor is directed to Division 0, the General Conditions and Supplementary General Conditions, and to applicable sections of Division I, General Requirements, which are hereby made part of this section.

  1. PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project is for the construction of a new entrance signs for the Catalpa Oaks & Red Oaks County Parks. The work for this project includes, but is not limited to:

1) Constructing wood signage structures and sign panels.

2) Producing text and graphics on sign panels and other wood members.

3) Staining and/or painting wood members and sign panels.

4) Providing all materials and labor necessary to create a safe and ready to use product.

5) Installation by others.

  1. CONTRACTOR QUALIFICATIONS

Contractor shall have a minimum of 5 years in construction installation of sign similar to this project. Contractor to submit 3 projects completed within the last two (2) years with reference contact name, sign address, phone number and/or e-mail address.

D.Definitions

The following definitions are provided to describe terms used on the drawing:

  1. Mounting Extension—wood members that are between the pillar’s concrete block and the facia support. It provides a way to attach the facia support to the pillar so

that the facia support can be clear of the uneven surface of the stone veneer and also helps support the weight of the sign panels.

  1. Facia Support—wood members that support the facia board which protrudes from both sides of sign panel vertically so the sign panels are plumb and centered.
  1. Stops—wood members attached to facia supports. These will position the sign panel vertically so the sign panels are plumb and centered.
  1. Sign Panels—laminated wood members that create a panel on which the sign’s text and graphics will be applied.
  1. Large Blocks—wood members used to secure facia to facia supports, brace and light shield.
  1. Small Blocks—smaller wood members used to secure facia to light shield.
  1. Sign Frame—wood members put together in an “I” beam formation that supports the sign panels across the span from pillar to pillar.
  1. Pillar—concrete block covered with stone veneer that frames and supports the ends of the sign panels.

  1. Light Shield—wood members that control glare and direction of light fixtures. (Light fixtures (NIC) to be provided in future by others.)
  1. Submittals – By awarded contractor
  1. Submit shop drawings detailing sign panel lamination. Shop drawings of sign panel graphics and text must also be provided.
  1. Submit color chips and manufacturers’ name of paints and stains to be used, for approval by Owner.

the contractor must provide an individual that has been in the business of producing signage similar to the signs of this project for a minimum of two years.

  1. Delivery, Storage and Handling
  1. All materials in containers shall be delivered to the project site in their unopened original, labeled, manufacturer’s containers.
  2. All other materials shall be shipped in a manner that will protect them from damage during transit and upon delivery.
  1. Materials shall be delivered to 2800 Watkins Lake Road, Waterford, MI48328. Call before delivery. Contacts listed in paragraph E 2.
  1. The Owner assumes no responsibility for damaged or stolen materials or for materials stored on OaklandCounty land without Owner’s authorization. Materials stored without the Owner’s authorization will be removed at no additional cost to Owner.
  1. The Contractor is responsible for delivering, unloading, handling and placing all materials. The Owner will not provide assistance.
  1. The Contractor is responsible for accepting and taking inventory of all materials delivered to the project sites. Park employees or other park system employees, with the exception of the Design and Development staff, named above, are not authorized to accept deliveries on behalf of the Contractor. Deliveries shall be scheduled by calling Joe Figa or Zack Crane tel # above
  1. Damaged, incorrect/unsuitable materials will be repaired or replaced at no additional cost to the Owner. The Owner will be the final authority as to what constitutes enough damage to warrant repair or replacement. All materials must meet the requirements of these specifications. Those materials that do not meet these specifications will be replaced with materials that meet the specification.

PART IIPRODUCTS

A. Wood

Sign frame members shall be pine.

  1. Wood members laminated that make up the sign panels shall be clear-heart redwood.( Alternate – clear cedar)
  1. Wood planks for lower signs on which graphics and/or text shall be applied shall be clear-heart redwood. (Alternate – clear cedar)
  1. Mounting extensions and sign supports are to be smooth cut cedar.
  1. All wood to be free of checks, splints, cracks, warps, insect damage and other imperfections.
  1. Wood that does not meet these specifications will be replaced at no additional cost to the Owner.
  1. See also sheets C-1, C-2, and C-3.

B.Paint/Stains/Primer

  1. Stains to be solid, Olympic brand or approved equal
  1. Paints to be latex, glossy, enamel, high quality brand, suitable for exterior use by Benjamin Moore or approved equal.
  1. Colors listed on plan and provided below to be verified with owner for approval. Samples are to be provided prior to work commencing.

A site visit to the Waterford Oaks sign to view an existing park sign is mandated to assure duplication of existing signs.

  • Primer to be a high quality brand, suitable for exterior use and compatible with the chosen paint and stains. Brand and type to be determined by Contractor. All paint applied as recommended by the manufacture , in spreading rate as recommended , and in professional manner in compliance with applicable portions of the latest edition of a the following standards:

Painting and Decorating Contractors of America, Painting Specifications

Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) Painting Specifications.

C. Nuts/Bolts/Washers

  1. All nuts, bolts (or threaded rods), and washers are to be stainless steel.
  1. Nuts and washers shall be the locking type.
  1. Bolts are to be ½” threaded with nuts or threaded rods may be used.
  1. The Contractor may suggest an alternate method, but this must be approved by the Owner.

D. Nails

1. All nails shall be galvanized steel.

2. Nails to be of a length sufficient to securely hold the members together.

E. Joint Sealant (where applicable)

Joints will be created where the stone facia meets the sign panels, supports and extensions, and where pillar caps meet sign panel caps. The joints are to be filled with the sealant, “Siladur ® Combiflex”, as manufactured by Sika Corporation, P.O. Box 297, Lyndhurst, N.J., 07071, 1 (800) 933-7452. PART III

Preparation

A. Painting/Staining

  1. The sign panels shall be stained and painted in the shop.
  1. All other wood members shall be stained in the field, after they are installed.
  1. All exposed bolts, nuts, nail heads, and screw heads shall be covered with stain or paint. Prime prior to painting.
  1. Primer, stain and paint shall be applied evenly and uniformly thoroughly covering all exposed areas.
  1. Paint and stain must be smooth and free of noticeable bush strokes.

B. Creating Graphics and Text

  1. Prior to sandblasting, sign panel boards shall have been planed and cut to create true 90˚ corners and a uniformly smooth finish. This may alter the construction drawing dimensions. The Contractor must adjust the dimensions of other members accordingly. All lamination glue must be sanded off.
  1. All graphics and text shall be created by sandblasting. Note that some areas of the signs are not to be sandblasted so that structural members and decorative members can fit flush. At no point shall the sandblasting be to a depth to where the integrity and strength of the wood is jeopardized.
  1. All graphics and text must be uniform in thickness, style, widths, etc. and be identical to the elevations as shown on sheet C-3.
  1. Prime, paint, or stain graphics and text as shown on sheet C-3. and dwg. 2

C. Joint Sealing

If stored, must be stored at a temperature of 40˚ -- 95˚ F.

Before using, condition the material to be a minimum of 65˚ -- 85˚ F.

Apply to clean, dry surfaces, do not apply when the temperature will be 55˚ or below during the product’s curing time.

Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
