Match Report

Under 10 League

Castlepollard Reds 5 Castlepollard Whites 2

The two under 10 Celtic teams took each other onin a very competitiveleague game & the "Reds" came out on top with a hard earned 5 - 2 victory. Along with bragging rights camethe three points thatkept the "Reds"as table toppersin the major League.

The 5 - 2 score linedoes not reflect what a great performance the "Whites" put inas theypushed the "Reds" hard all over the park. There were some great individualperformances put in byShane Lynch, Nathan leeAughey & EoinFagan who all had great games, Lynch was outstanding &covered every blade of grassto win the ball.

The deadlock was broken half way through the 1st half when Anthony Fagan finished off from close range after Niall Keating & Christopher Kiernan had their chances blocked.Fagan who also had a great gamewas involved in the build up to the 2nd goal as he crossed over for Niall Keating to finish off.

Last years top scorer Christopher Kiernan bagged the 3rd with a fine solo effort. Both Keating & Kiernan are in tremendous form with a tally of 17 goals between them this season

The "Whites" kept pushing hard with Gavin Mulvey & Ryan McGraw both making Charles Flynn work hardin goals, the pressure finally paid off when McGraw pounced on a parried shot & bundled the ball over the line. Ryan Moore scored a 4th for the "Reds" following great tackling from Shane lynch whoput Moore through toscore his 2nd of the season & extend thelead. Kiernan gotthe 5th after he finished off with a fine left foot shot. Both Luke Moore & Joe Higgins had chances in the 2nd half

The "Whites" heads never dropped & they all battled hard until the end. Mulvey & McGraw, again making Charles Flynn pull off some fantastic saves that earned him a share of the "Man of the Match" award with Shane Lynch. The "Whites"efforts finally paid dividends when Mulvey scored a well deserved goal.

Under 12 Connaught Shield

Castlepollard Celtic 1 St.Francis 8

Castlepollard bowed out of the Connaught Shield is unusual circumstances on Saturday in Streete. Although well beaten in the end the Celtic team actually lead for longer than St.Francis who went on a goal feast in the second half.

Castlepollard went one nil up when Conor McGraw finished a wonderful move that started in defense and saw the Castlepollard boys sweep up field, Joseph Rabbitt put in the final cross that was coolly finished by McGraw low into the corner. Celtic held their own and any time their defense was breached Charles Flynn easily dealt with the danger. Disaster struck on the stroke of half time when the visitors scored from close range after a corner wasn’t cleared properly. The home side started the second half well enough and had the ball in the net only to see the ref blow for offside. Shortly after Rabbitt saw his effort just go the wrong side of the post. St.Francis then went straight up the other end to go into the lead fifteen minutes into the second half. From then on it was all going the way of the visitors who continued pressing home their advantage long after the Castlepollard team had thrown in the towel. So this was a valuable lesson to the young boys never to drop the head when things start going against you.

Under 13 Girls League

UCL Harps 2 Castlepollard Celtic 0

The Castlepollard girls traveled to Ballymahon to play two back matches in the league on Astro turf last Sunday morning. They played two games over the course of two hours, first up was a game against Olympic Rovers who were on top of the table and the second was against UCL Harps.

Castlepollard lost the first match 5-0 against a very strong side. When they went out to play the second match the girls were ready to give it all. Celtic’s Captain Laura Coyle who played in goal pulled off some great saves. At half time the sides were level 0-0. Centre forward Jenny Hynes had some great chances early in the second half as Castlepollard piled on the pressure, then against the run of play Harps broke up field and scored to take the lead. Castlepollard continued to take the game to Harps but just before the end were caught again as Harps scored their second and the decisive goal.

The girls enjoyed their day out and are looking forward to their next match in 2010.

Paula and Ian wish all the girls and their families happy Christmas and new year.
