Creative Arts Workshop

For Secondary School Students

::Image and Text workshop::

I. General Concept

Among many other creative mediums, our workshop mainly focuses on the fusion of image and text as a tool of self-expression and communication. Through a combination of theory, practices and discussion, studentsare to materialize the entire experience in the final project - a visual diary– with their very own creative ideas. Basic concepts of photography and creative writing will be introduced in appropriate manners, according to students’ level, together with a variety of group and individual exercises on image and/or text. We hope to facilitate students’ personal exploration, communication with others, as well as the world around them.

II. Aims

- To broaden students’ visionbyintroducing the many possibilities of photography and text

- To explore the relationship between image and text by the making of a visual dairy

- ToIncrease students’sensitivity in everyday observation

- To encouragestudents in terms of self expression on creative and interpersonal aspects

II. Target Participants

- JuniorSecondary School students (Form2-4)

- 20 students in class

III. Content Brief

- General introduction to photography:

As a freshening start, we plan to introduce students to a technically easier but possibly closer-to-everyday-life form of photography- snapshot. Then they are guided to a “blind photography” exercise to experience different ways of seeing and taking pictures. Further introduction to different genres of photography is given, to enhance students insight and vocabulary in the medium.

- General introduction to text:

In order to break free from “traditional” approach to writing, we will first bring the concept of stream of consciousness to students by an effective writing exercise called automatic writing. It is aimed at freeing students’ mind and hands, so as to appreciate text in a different light, and also to better understand themselves. Similar to photography, we will provide an appropriate amount of reading to students to inspire them in creating their own writing style. Then we will introduce creative ways of merging the two artistic elements by work display and extensive exercises.

-Production of a visual diary:

As the ultimate goal of the workshop is a visual diary by each student, the exercises will be tailored to the creation of the final output. We also bring in further elements to texturize students’ work, for instance, the concept of collage and drawing.
