Ozzie’$ Tip of the Month

Use credit cards as an absolute last resort for paying for college expenses. The average college student has credit card debt of $7831, which would take 29 years to pay off at the monthly minimum of 2.5% and current interest rates. Your total interest payment would be over $11,000 in addition to the $7831 debt.

How much do you know about Identity Theft?

1.  Don’t give anyone your Social Security, credit card, or bank information unless you know the source or have initiated the contact.

2.  Don’t just throw away papers that have important account or financial information listed on them. Shred them instead.

3.  Keep your credit card and ATM receipts in a safe place until you’ve paid the bill or balanced your check book.

4.  Review your credit card statements and telephone bill for unauthorized charges, and report it immediately to the company.

5.  If you get an unexpected email asking you to update or verify very important information, be careful. This could be a scam called “phishing”.

6.  If you are a victim of identity theft, report the crime to the police immediately.

Now Take the Quiz!

1.  True or False: I don’t need to report identity theft to the police, they will just know.

2.  True or False: I should throw away all my receipts before I balance my checkbook.

3.  True or False: It’s a good idea for me to throw away my credit card statements when I clean out my car at the gas station.

4.  True or False: It’s okay to give my Social Security number to a company that I know and do business with.

5.  True or False: I should never respond to an email from someone I don’t know who is asking for my personal information.
