Decision
Federal Programs
v  West Elementary students are continuing to use the Graduation Express and Books to Go buses as further after-school resources for tutoring and reading. Aida Schomburg passed out fliers in Spanish and English with information, locations, and times.
2.  / Parent Involvement
v  Friday, January 18, 2013 is Record’s Day- No School for students.
v  There will be no school on Monday, January 21, 2013 for Martin Luther King Day.
v  Friday, January 25, 2013 is the 2nd quarter Academic Awards Assembly on the bus loop. Grades 3-5 will be at 8:15 am, and grades K-2 will be at 9:15 am.
v  Friday, January 25, 2013 will be the 3rd grade parent involvement meeting at 9:00 am in the cafeteria.
v  February 21, 2013 Eckerd Theater will be presenting a program for the students entitled “Woodland Tales.” Grades 3-5 will be at 8:15 am, and grades K-2 will be at 9:15 am in the cafeteria.
v  There will be no school on February 18, 2013 for President’s Day.
3.  / Academic Improvement Initiatives
v  The 21st Century after-school program currently has 70 students involved. It runs Monday-Thursday from 2-5 pm. This year’s focus is tied into Common Core “Problem-based learning.” Students are making their own power points.
v  Teachers tutoring after school on Mondays and Thursdays.
4.  / State/ National Assessments
v  There are 52 school days until FCAT testing begins on April 15, 2013. This year will be the first time 5th grade will be doing math on the computer; in 2 years all FCAT will be on the computer.
v  Tuesday, February 26, 2013 will be the FCAT writing test for 4th graders.
5.  / Next Generation State Standards/ Common Core Standards
v  The 21st Century after-school program currently has 70 students involved. It runs Monday-Thursday from 2-5 pm. This year’s focus is Common Core “Problem-based learning.” Students are making their own power points.
v  The Common Core Committee is continuously looking for and sharing with their teams new resources that present complex text and prepare students for the new up-coming PARCC test. We will be adopting a new reading series next year to make sure it is geared toward Common Core.
6.  / Professional Development for teachers and staff
v  Teachers and staff continue to use PD360 as a resource. There are instructional videos, teachers can join learning communities, and there are also open forums where teachers can post questions and ideas.
v  On Monday, January 14, 2013 and Tuesday, January 15, 2013, Libby Pollett was on campus. She was observing teachers in the classroom teaching math. She offered teachers suggestions for ways to improve their lessons through the use of manipulatives and how to have in-depth conversations with children about how they arrived at their answer.

Mr. Shayman asked the parents if there were any questions or concerns.
Mrs. Welch asked if it would be possible to look into getting canopies put over the playgrounds to have them shaded. She passed out a flier with contact information for a company to get prices.
