CARMEL ART FESTIVAL

CAF Sculpture in the Park Guidelines

Welcome

To all ARTISTS who are interested participating in the 2007 Sculpture in the Park event welcome!

This year we will continue the exhibition of emerging and mid- career artist’s work in DevendorfPark in beautiful Carmel by the Sea. We again invite Community Sculptors to submit slides or photos of work suitable for outdoor showing completed in the last two years, for a juried exhibition.

After last year’s success we will be expanding both the number of available places to 10 artists (each displaying one sculpture) and expanding the residency requirement to the entire state of California. Honors will be awarded this year for the first time.

This year’s show will be juried by a panel of prominent artists and art professionals. Our staff has been augmented with two fine artists in our community and we would like to welcome Ed Eyth and Todd Kruper to the Sculpture Team. We have begun an internship program with CalStateMontereyBay and the student intern this year will be working with our Board and staff to make this years exhibition the best yet.

1. The first step in participation is to download an entry form and a sculpture list from our website: Then please mail to have it received March 1st 2007 to: (Entries must be postmarked before March 1st, 2007.)

Following is some information on this year’s Sculpture in the Park event:
The Sculpture:

Do keep in mind that all sculpture should be appropriate for outdoors.Size is important. We want to make sure none of the sculptures get lost in the outdoor setting. If the piece you are considering is relatively small (under 36" high), please consider a larger one or perhaps a more substantial (but not overpowering) pedestal that can give it the illusion of being larger than it is. Works smaller that 24” in a single dimension are not appropriate.

Pedestals:
Please use attractive-looking pedestals that would be worthy of being inside your own gallery.Use only solid pedestals not tables or pedestals covered with carpeting. If your sculpture is quite large and sturdy on its own base, you probably won't need a pedestal. Be prepared to provide shims if your sculpture (with or without its pedestal) is not level on the grass. It rained last year, an odd occurrence, but be prepared and it is your responsibility to insure that the out of doors display is appropriate.
At the Park:

The City does not allow us to "sell" at the park, only to direct people to a studio or website or to a festival official at the tent. All inquires about the sale of the work in the park will be directed there. We may put brochures and artist info on the tables in the tent -- not on the pedestals. We are not to have chairs or flowering potted plants placed next to the sculptures. If you have someone available to answer questions about the work that is wonderful, please inform them to direct interested individuals to the festival tent for serious inquiry. Sculpture has sold as a result of representation in the park and it is always good to have someone familiar with the work connecting with the people in a friendly, non-obtrusive manner.

Commission:

The commission structure is a 25/75 split the festival receives 25% the artist 75%

Moving:
The artist is responsible for their own moving of sculpture to and from the park. If you will be using J & M Moving, you would be dealing with them directly.

Engraved Sculpture Identification Plaques:

Part of the participation packet will be a sculpture list form for you to fill out for each work of art’s identification plaque. This information will appear on your sculpture's plaque, make sure it is correct, this is your responsibility. The festival will cover the costs of the plaque.
