CAO Common Mistakes
- Names: name must match Leaving Cert Exam form or you will get no offer. Have you used a double-barrel name? Shortened version: Rebecca / Becky?
- Couple of thousand did not write down any course at all!
- Order of preference not adhered to.
- Forgetting to mention previous exams (FETAC/repeat students may need previous Leaving Cert requirements).
- Few thousand didn’t tick current leaving Certificate box.
- NUI exemptions not submitted (no good in August).
- Wrong date of birth on original application: locks candidate out of application.
- Not applying to Level 6/7 programmes which can provide a route to the exact same level 8 qualification.
CAO Application
No postal confirmation of Change of Mind or Confirmation of Acceptance offer this year. Both online.
Statement of Application Record will be posted in May and followed by email. It’s very important that is checked to ensure it’s correct.

Architecture in UL still requires a portfolio but it is not a restricted course (the portfolio can be submitted up to Easter).

Art Portfolio News
For students under pressure to complete a portfolio DIT has two portfolio days to aid students: 23rd November and 8th February. Contact DIT to book a place.
DLIADT has an alternative to portfolio preparation: on the 7th and 8th February students can attend the college and do an art workshop. They can use this work instead of submitting a portfolio. They can also submit a portfolio a portfolio and the college will judge them on the best work.
NCAD is no longer setting a portfolio brief – instead they’re giving “guidelines” in order to make it easier for students who are not coming from a strong artistic background. There are also portfolio workshops in January to help students finish their portfolios.
LCAD Art & Design course is no longer restricted. Portfolios will be accepted on a set date in March, May and July.

Business in UL: Students all apply to LM050 and just after they receive their offers they will have to elect their stream, however, they can select again at the end of first year (Language degree options are subject to meeting language requirements).

Sport Management & Coaching IT Carlow: Common entry to all 3 courses: Rugby / GAA / Soccer. The portfolio requirements are the same but applicants can tailor their portfolio to the individual course.

TCD is switching from three terms to two semesters from 2018 onwards. The college will now open two weeks earlier than usual on the 10th September. Fresher’s Week starts on the 3rd September.

UCD Veterinary – remember applicants need to have 60 hours animal handling experience. They will have to download a form and get it signed by the Vet and then upload the form for UCD.

Marino Institute Fees Anomaly: Please note that Education Studies CM010 and Early Childhood Education CM020 are not in the Free Fees Scheme but you can get the Susi grant.

Maynooth University has dropped the third language requirementfor the following degree areas: Finance, Accounting & Finance, Equine Business, Business & Accounting, Entrepreneurship and Law. Also, this is the last year that first year in Arts will run in Kilkenny.

NUIG Global Languages: Italian and Spanish are available Ab Initio (from beginner’s level) as a major option and Chinese and translation studies as a minor option.

Those applying to sit the HPAT please note there are 80 video tutorials available from ACER on the website and there are 5 practice booklets available at €20 or €25 a booklet. This will greatly assist those who intend to sit the exam. Registration is now open. Early application is advisable in order to get the nearest centre to you. Registration closes 5.15 January 20th. Exam takes place 24th February, results late June.
