Class Updates

In Writing, students were introduced to their country research project. They were assigned a country and will be researching the geography, lifestyle and population of their country over the next several weeks.

In Reading, students read the play "The Calabash Kids". Students identified how Shindo, the main character, affected other parts of the play.

In Computers, students began researching their country.

In Math, students identified patterns with the facts of 7. This is the last set of facts we need to learn. The 7s are unlike any of the other facts since they are not related to any other. Since we know all of our other facts, 7x7 is the only new fact we learned today. We discussed strategies to use to help us remember our 7s facts. Students practiced all of their facts to help them develop fluency.

In Science, students created a mixture using salt, rocks and sand. Students learned that in order for it to be a mixture they need to be able to separate all of the materials. Students brainstormed ideas for how to separate the materials. They removed the rocks using their hands. We added water so the salt would dissolve and used a filter to separate the sand from the salt water. Students concluded that evaporation would separate the salt from the water. We watched a video of a time lapsed bowl of salt water evaporating.

Students made immigrants out of clothespins. Students had to choose a country they wanted their immigrant to be from. They had to dress their clothespin how someone from that country would dress. They turned out great and I know they will be excited to bring them home soon to share with you.

We still need fabric and clothespin stands!!!

Thank you to everyone who has donated fabric and clothespins. I still need more fabric and one more package of stands for the clothespins. They look like little wooden doughnuts. You can find them at most craft stores like Michael's and A.C. Moore. We will be doing a little reading and writing activity to bring the book Molly's Pilgrim to life. The activity will take place the week of Thanksgiving. We will be making little immigrant figurines, so we need scraps of fabric for children to cut out clothing to dress their clothespin figures.
