Graduate Assistant Description

The Indiana State University Career Center is located in the Student Services Building, 2nd floor. The office consists of a Director, 6 Asst. Directors/Career Counselors, 6 support staff, and several undergraduate student workers.

This fast-paced, student-oriented office provides career services to students, alumni, and community members. The Center offers career counseling, internship opportunities, and placement services. In addition, the Center promotes and delivers various workshops that prepare students for their professional career search. Staff work as generalists, being responsible for all aspects of the Center's operations.

Duties:

The Graduate Assistant will serve in a capacity similar to the counselors. Orientation and training will be provided. Responsibilities within the graduate student’s 15 weekly hours include:

·  One-on-one and group career counseling

·  Resume and cover letter critiques

·  Practice interviews/critiques

·  Placement and internship counseling

·  Teaching of modules within the Counseling 135 course (Career and Life Planning)

·  Information presentations before small and large groups

·  Student outreach

·  Attendance at weekly staff meetings

·  Special projects as needed / assigned

Expectations:

·  The Graduate Assistant will take an interest in the services provided, expanding their knowledge base.

·  The Graduate Assistant will not be able to study during scheduled office hours; time will be used to meet required duties and to develop specific competencies.

·  The Graduate Assistant will be expected to dress in a professional manner.

·  The Graduate Assistant's class schedule will be considered when establishing work hours at the Center. The prime time needed for direct service to clients is M – F, 9:00 – 3:00.

·  Due to the time-consuming training, it is hoped that the Graduate Assistant will commit to at least two semesters — as long as both parties are in agreement.
