Canyon Hills Junior High School Competition Robotics Teams

The Teams

This is an inclusive, not exclusive, team. It is open to all students of Canyon Hills Junior School; unless they have earned not being included (such as by poor behavior or poor grades). Although the captains and coaches have the final decision on how someone participates, all are welcome and will be allowed to participate.

VEX EDR (Metal robots)

VEX EDR team #3671 – The Canyon Hills Robotic Team’s “Terminator” robot. Captain: Rahil

VEX EDR team #3671c – The Canyon Hills Dream Machine’s “ALPHA” robot. Captain: Oishee

VEX EDR team #3671d – The Canyon Hills Geek Squad’s “Robo-Ark” robot. Captain: Noah

VEXIQ (Plastic)

VEXIQ team #3671a – The Canyon Hills Howler’s “Coyote-Bot” robot. Captain Amaan

VEXIQ team #3671b – The Canyon Hills Red Raptor’s “The Tumbler” robot. Captain Jake

The Competitions

In the VEX Robotics Competitions, teams of students are tasked with designing, programming, and building a robot to play against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge. Classroom STEM concepts are put to the test on the playing field as students learn lifelong skills in teamwork, leadership, communications, engineering, and more.

The game for the 2015-16 competition year isNothing But Net; an exciting, fast-paced game in which robots try to score in a variety of ways. The object ofNothing But Netis to attain a higher score than the opposing alliance by scoring balls and bonus balls in your low and high goals, and by elevating robots in your Climbing Zone.

Jobs include: DRIVERS, PROGRAMMERS, CAD PROGRAMERS, DESIGNERS, CONSTRUCTORS, PRESENTERS, RESEACHERS, STEM SCIENCE PROJECT, PIT BOSS, etc…

Collaborative: One of our robots will be driven by two of our members working with another team to score the most points. For the metal robots there will be two additional robots on the field trying to score more points than our team.

Skills: One of our robots will be driven by two of our members on a field with only our robot to score the most points.

Programming: One of our robots on a field alone scoring the most points possible while completely autonomous.

STEM Presentation: A presentation similar to a science fair project related to robotics. An example would be to do a project on solar energy and then build a solar powered robot with Mr. Cabase’s robotics equipment.

MEETINGS will be after school everyday except Fridays and holidays in room 511. Members are expected to attend meetings at least one day a week. You are not required or even expected to come to all or most of the meetings. There are multiple days to allow teams to meet on different days and to work around kid’s schedules. Pick One Day.

Costs

There is no cost to be part of the team.I have donated the use of my extensive robotic equipment at no cost. The coaches have donated their time, also at no cost.

However, competition teams have costs. The lists of costs are as follows (all are optional):

1) Cost of registration & competitions. This is per team, not per child. (ifwe do not come up with funding, then the children can still compete against each other with my robots at Canyon Hills Junior High.).

2) Food.Parents/guardians must provide food for their ownchild/children.

3) Transportation. Parents/guardians must provide/arrange transportation after meetings at schoolandto from any competitions or outside meetings for their own child/children. The parent/guardian must supervise or arrange supervision of their children during competitions or outside meetings.

4) T-shirts. I (Mr. Cabase) will not be arranging t-shirts, but if a parent/guardian/coach wishes to, then the cost falls on the individual children’s parents/guardians. Unless paid for by a sponsor (i.e. George’s Grill sponsors a team and provides t-shirts with their logo on it).

Sponsorship/Funding

Please do not stop looking for sponsors nor funding. There will be additional competitions opening. Additionally, I am allowing the kids to use my robots at no charge and there are enough kits to make more competition robots and thus more teams if we find additional people/groups that wish to sponsor a team.
