Candle Procedures

Before the first rotation: (this often will be done before you arrive)
1.  Put wax in can – 1.5 scoops from small ladle
2.  Put water in can either pouring or using large ladle (fill to top, just below handle hole)
~5 minutes before rotation starts
Candle person #1
1.  Take the students to the blacksmith shop – ring the anvil to indicate 5 minute warning and give the blacksmith talk. / Candle person #2
1.  Carry cans to stations using wooden trays
2.  Ensure all pots have a small amount of water in them
3.  Refill wax in can that is in the black pot, as well as water if necessary
4.  If last rotation, turn stove off
As students enter
Candle person #1
1.  Ask the number of students
2.  Sit students in candle stations (3-4 kids/stn)
3.  Begin introduction and candle instructions / Candle person #2
1.  Write number of students on “count sheet”
During Candles
1.  Help with the candles
2.  Write names on tape
As students finish
Candle person #1
1.  Direct the students to the picnic table not being used
2.  Give the candle talk
3.  5 minutes before end of rotation, take students to blacksmith shop
4.  Ring anvil to give other groups 5 minute warning
5.  Give blacksmith talk / Candle person #2
1.  Collect candles on group stick to dry (walk around outside of tables if able). Note, the sticks have numbers on them for specific rotations (1, 2, 3)
2.  Take hot wax cans and put them back in the pots. Add an additional 1 or so ladles of wax to can and any water necessary to keep at correct level (just below wholes in side of can)
3.  Cover pots with lids so does not splatter
4.  Give 5 minute warnings to candle person #1
After the last Session
1.  Take hot wax cans to dumping station using wooden trays (just outside man door)
2.  Dump cans of wax into pails of cold water at dumping station
3.  Skim wax from the pails into the candle recycle plastic bin
4.  Dump the water in the pails. Place inside the barn
5.  If the students are eating inside, determine if any stations (including plastic on table) need to be moved to leave room for lunches
6.  Set up candle stations for the next day (wicks, tape)
7.  Get booklets for classes (adjust number of booklets based on total on “count sheet”); should also have answer sheet and any marketing pages.
8.  Get 4 grocery bags (or # rotating). Number them for each rotation with students. Put candles in appropriately numbered bags (make sure hardened) and place on top of booklets
9.  Clean stovetop
10. Add water to containers on stove - kettle full, yellow & silver ½ full, black ¼ full
11. Put cornbread for day in basket
