Canadian Association of Nephrology Social Workers (CANSW)

For 37 years, CANSW has been the only Canadian national professional association for social workers specializing in the exciting and demanding field of nephrology. Committed to the highest standards of social work practice, CANSW prides itself on “giving back” to its members by annually presenting low cost, high quality conferences drawing on top speakers from across North America. In recent years, CANSW members have also benefited from a very active exclusive email list server allowing instant consultation and “brain storming” with over one hundred of their peers across the country. In addition, there is a members-only section of the website, listing useful resources and templates. For further information about the benefits of becoming a CANSW member please visit our website

Our Conference Theme: Psychosocial Nephrology:Reflecting and Renewing the Heart of Social Work Practice

Highlights of the Conference

Gavril Hercz’s, Psycho Nephrologist, key note presentation. Dr. Hercz’s major area of interest is the impact of physical illness on patients, families and caregivers. He has also developed psychonephrology.com; an online community of nephrology and mental health clinicians who are committed to understanding and helping patients cope with the psychosocial impact of chronic kidney disease. This focus also includes families and caregivers who are also profoundly affected by their support of these patients. Throughout his presentation, Dr. Hercz will engage CANSW members in an advanced discussion of the psychosocial issues faced by kidney patients and the ways in which social workers “dance close to the flame” in our work with patients. Social work practice lies at the heart of the psychosocial issues experienced by patients. Powerful and meaningful, this key note presentation will provide an opportunity for reflection and renewal.

Dr. Hercz will also share his innovative work on patients and families transitioning to dialysis and provide tools for social workers to help ease these transitions. He will share his involvement with the design and implementation of a Transition to Dialysis Unit and invite CANSW members to share their own successes in this emerging area of specialization.

Extending our focus on the psychosocial issues experienced by patients, Deborah McLeod will lead us in an exploration of the topic of sexuality of patients living with CKD. To round out our experience Nina Papazian will present:To Sleep Perchance to Dream: The Importance of Quality Sleep in Supporting Psychosocial Wellbeing in Dialysis Patients

The conference setting is the historic Belcourt Spirituality Centre, a former convent, in the beautiful, pastoral community of South Rustico, PEI. The venue is peaceful and meditative, one which promotes reflection and renewal. This setting will provide CANSW members with a unique and intimate opportunity for professional development which will be revitalizing and restorative.

We look forward to welcoming you to PEI!
