Dev Cropper Memorial Award

Dev was a final year student of Government at LSE when he died suddenly in London on March 25th 1998. During his three years at LSE, Dev was intensely involved in the community life of the School and beyond. He was actively engaged in the political life of the student body and served on the Students’ Union Executive. He often contributed to the Union’s newspaper, The Beaver, and he was involved in other public interest causes including Students Against Racism and the GMB Trade Union. Additionally, he worked as a volunteer for an off-campus charity, Action Against Hunger. Along with his commitment to a large number of voluntary organisations, Dev was an excellent student in academic terms. In recognition for all of his efforts, he was awarded by the Students’ Union the position of an Honorary Student (Honorary life membership in the Students’ Union), the week before he died.

  • As a way of commemorating Dev’s exemplary service to the student community at the LSE, the Students’ Union offers an annual award to a student starting their final year of study.
  • This award will consist of £2,500 given as a monthly stipend for the duration of that academic year (nine months in total, October–June inclusive). The awardee must be registered with and continue his/her studies at LSE. The grant will be made to the recipient on a termly basis through the Scholarships Office.
  • Fellow students or other members of the School community will nominate candidates for the award. The main criterion for consideration for the award is involvement in and contribution to student life during the nominee’s first five terms at LSE. In keeping with Dev’s interests, students involved in cultural and educational activities organised through the Students’ Union or its societies and/or charitable or political activities which provide benefit to others and which present educational or developmental opportunities for students will be considered.
  • In the event of two or more nominees being judged to have made an equally outstanding contribution to the corporate life of the student body, the panel will take into account their respective financial positions and make the award to the student felt to be in greatest financial need.
  • In your supporting statement for application to the Dev Cropper Memorial Award, please give details of the range and depth of the candidates involvement in the following areas:
  • Cultural and educational activities organised through the Students’ Union or its societies.
  • Charitable or political activities which provide benefit to others and which present educational or developmental opportunities for students.
