Counselor Coordinator

Overview

The Counselor Coordinators are in charge of the happiness and well being of all campers in camp. As such they are also in charge of Counselor management. The majority of the counselor coordinator’s time is spent around camp observing cabin groups and assisting counselors. There is also an amount of office work involved.

Responsibilities

  1. Create Cabins lists and submit by Wednesday AM.
  2. When developing cabin lists be sure to move bunks as little as possible.
  3. Use Cabin Maps to create cabin lists.
  4. Be sure camper letters to their counselor are printed and ready to distribute by Sunday after staff circle.
  5. Blank counselor letter to campers handed out by Saturday staff circle. These should be available in the office by Wednesday for people who would like to complete early.
  6. Provide formal reviews to all counselors for every 4 week of work. Informal reviews should be done half way between each formal review.
  7. Reviews should be typed and submitted to the Camp Director.
  8. Attend Tuesday AM meetings at 9:00am.
  9. Put camper behavioral notes in Camp Minder.
  10. Assist by driving long trips at least twice.
  11. Check in with each cabin each day.
  12. Two to three of these should be at night
  13. Eat at least one meal with a cabin each day.
  14. Hit each cabin in the course of the week.
  15. Check in with every cabin on Sunday night.
  16. Be proactive about needed counselor and camper breaks. Be there to step in for a counselor when needed or remove a camper from the cabin in order to give the entire cabin a break.
  17. If there are a lot of cabin issues utilize program staff during siesta and evening time.
  18. You are responsible for every camper in camp.
  19. This means working with counselors to manage behavioral issues as well as ensuring that all bonding cabin groups together and providing a fun and engaging experience to all.
  20. Respond to parent emails and phone calls with in 4 hours. One day max.
  21. Be sure to check emails Friday night.
  22. Be model staff in attention to detail and willingness to pitch in. Be places on time or early.
  23. Prepare Camp Beautifications and assign to cabin groups each morning.
  24. Check in with all cabin groups early in the week to determine which overnights will be canceled or altered.
  25. It is the goal that every group attend their overnight.
  26. If riders, sailors or bikers attend their overnight, they should be brought back to camp in time to attend program no later than 10 am.
  27. Play an integral role in check in and check out day. Please see separate pages for info.
  28. Check cabins in on Sunday. See separate sheet.
  29. Help with cabin check out on Friday.
  30. Be present at staff circle to help identify concerns to staff.

Qualities Needed

  1. General
  2. Understanding of the mission and goals of Camp Olson and an appreciation for living out of doors.
  3. Ability to manage peers.
  4. Affinity for working with children.
  5. Ability to problem solve.
  6. Ability to work with the management team.
  7. Specific
  8. Minimum of 18 years of age.
  9. Good communication skills.
  10. Experience in group leadership.
