How to Keep a Geosciences Binder

A well-organized binder is a personalized study tool that becomes more and more valuable as the semester progresses.

Binder Organization

1.EVERYTHING -- your class notes, labs, and all handouts—everything pertaining to Geosciences belongs in a sturdy, regular sized 3 ring “loose-leaf” binder.

2.Bring your Geosciences notebook to class EVERY DAY. It needs to be separate from your other classes unless extenuating circumstances are cleared with me.

3.Organize your binder with dividers in this way:

First section:Class Info- This paper, syllabus, bathroom passes, weekly agendas

Second section: Warm-Ups- Organized in order by date with question written out

Third section: Notes/Work- This section will be broken in to smaller sections by unit. Each unit will have a divider and own TYPED table of contents.

Fourth Section:Loose leaf paper (many assignments will require use of your own paper

BE PREPARED!)

HINT: Points will be lost when you are unprepared for class. You may want to keep a small pencil holder in this binder as well to insure you always have your materials with you!

4.Your binder will be evaluated twice using the above criteria, once at the half way point, and once at the end of the semester. I will help you organize after each unit, but it is up to you to stay organized!

Grading Rubric:

Weekly Agendas: 2 Points each mustbe in the class info section

Warm-ups: 2 Points each mustbe in the Warm-ups section

(points for stamped warm-ups only)

Typed Tables of Contents: 5 points for each table of contents must be typed!!!!

Each section in Notes/Work should have its own table of contents after each divider

Decorated Dividers: 5 points each. Dividers must depict a concept that was learned in the unit! Example: Just drawing some water for oceans will not count!

  • Random assignments will be checked for completion and proper organization from each unit.
  • Loose papers shoved in pockets or work from other classes will result in a loss of points.
  • All units should be in the order in which we completed them.
  • Binders are worth 10 percent of your grade
