Pathways to Health Careers Camp

June 22 – 26, 2015

The Duke AHEC Program will offer a one week daycamp for rising 8thand 9thgrade students beginning June 22 – 26, 2015 on the campus of Duke University Medical Center. This camp is geared to exposing students to the variety of health careers available in an interactive and engaging atmosphere. During the week, students will interact with healthcare providers at Duke as well as explore health professions training programs at area universities or colleges.

Camp Details & Application Requirements:

  • Camp will be held from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm each day of the camp.
  • Students are expected to participate in the entire week of camp. If you cannot attend the entire 5 days, please do not submit an application.
  • A parent or guardian must drop-off and pick-up students at the designated times above.
  • Camp is open to students, who live in Durham County or a neighboring county. Out-of-state applications are not accepted.
  • A complete application form should be received in the Duke AHEC Program office before April 15, 2015
  • All applicants must have one (1) teacher or counselor recommendations. Please provide this link to the teacher or counselor who will provide a recommendation:
  • Upon acceptance, pay $100 registration fee. A limited number of scholarshipswill be considered.

Please note: We anticipate a large pool of applicants for the camp. Camp capacity is 30 students. The submission of a complete application by April 15, 2015 does not insure acceptance. After April 15th, all complete applications will be reviewed for admission. Notification of acceptance will be made via email no later than May 1st.

What can you expect during camp?
1. The camp will have a combination of presentations, hands-on activities, and tours of areas in hospital or at local universities.

2. Students are expected to come each day ready to participate fully in camp.

3. Walking, walking, and more walking! So students should plan to wear closed toe and comfortable shoes. Flip-flops of any kind are not allowed.

4. Lunch, snacks, and beverages to be provided each day.

5. Warm temperatures! Therefore, students can wear knee-length shorts, capris, skirts/dresses, or jeans. Shorts above the thigh or shirts with offensive language are not allowed. We will keep students hydrated with bottled water!

If your son or daughter is accepted to participate in the Pathway to Health Careers Camp offered by the Duke AHEC Program, each student must submit the following items in order to finalize their camp acceptance:

1. A copy of a recent immunization record

2. A signed Consent to Participate form

3. Payment in the form of a check or money order
