BACKGROUND

The Big Book Club Inc. (TBBC Inc.) was established in South Australia in 2003 as a not-for-profit incorporated organisation to “promote reading, the discussion of books and the promotion of Australian authors and illustrators”. Since its inception, TBBC Inc. has become the leading provider of quality, inclusive programs designed to promote reading and early childhood reading development initiatives.

The Little Big Book Club

Since 2006, LBBC with the support and guidance of the early childhood sector has been working on developing and implementing early reading programs on a national scale, by providing a holistic approach to early literacy development in children aged 0-2 years, 2 & 3 years and 4 & 5 years.

Our objectives include:

  • To increase awareness of the importance of reading aloud to children from infancy
  • To encourage parents to read regularly to their young children
  • To encourage parents to visit and join their local public library
  • To encourage the establishment of home libraries
  • To improve children’s emergent literacy skills prior to entering formal education
  • To encourage parents and caregivers to engage in conversation with their children to assist in the development of language and comprehension skills
  • To develop a lifelong love of books and reading.

LBBC’s most significant achievement is the delivery per annum of 23,000 FREE It’s Story Time Reading Packs to SA families with a child aged 0-12 months. LBBC’s vision is to provide South Australian familieswith access to quality books, resources and information, through multiple engagement points and supported by a comprehensive, multi-faceted website for both families and the childhood sector.

‘Reading regularly with young children is the single most important activity that a parent can undertake to develop a child’s ability to read and write. Research shows that the human brain is most open to environmental influences in the first few years of life with 75% of brain development occurring between birth and the age of four. As a baby absorbs new sights, textures, scents and sounds the connections in her brain that make learning possible multiply and become stronger. But if a baby does not use these connections, or does not use them enough, the connections are lost forever.’ Dorothy P. Dougherty, (1999) How to Talk To Your Baby, Avery

We are currently in our sixth year of providing a free Reading Pack to SA families and have received funding commitment from the State Government of South Australia. This funding enables LBBC to continue its integrated approach to lifelong learning and reading for children of SA.
