Elementary AIG Program

Procedures for Interpreting Individual Aptitude Test Results

When a student has been administered an individual aptitude test, care must be taken to ensure that the test results are reported in a reliable and accurate manner. Specifically, the Standard Error of Measurement (SEM) should be taken into consideration when reporting the results of individual aptitude tests.

Therefore, if a child is administered an individual aptitude test such as the WISC-IV (or the WPPSI) and misses the required indicator by one, two, or three points (either in percentile or in standard score), the AIG Program Teacher should contact the AIG Program Coordinator.

The AIG Program Coordinator will then work collaboratively with the school psychologists to determine the Standard Error of Measurement for that test result. This will give a range for the student’s aptitude. If the upper end of that range meets or exceeds the required indicator for aptitude, then the AIG Program Team will convene and review the student’s case for possible AIG identification. The table below provides the SEM ranges for common IQ scores on the WISC-IV.

120 / 91 %ile / 117 - 123 / 87 %ile – 94 %ile / No

If the AIG Program Team decides that AIG identification is appropriate and necessary, then a Form D Disposition Sheet should be completed by the AIG Program Chair. Special consideration should be given for students from underserved populations.

In summary, when a student is administered an individual aptitude test, the following considerations and procedures should occur:

·The AIG Program Teacher should screen the results to see if the student is missing the required indicator by one, two, or three points.

·If the child is only missing the indicator by a few points, the AIG Program Teacher forwards the results to the AIG Program Coordinator for further review.

·The AIG Program Coordinator will work with school psychologists to determine the SEM for the student.

·If the upper end of the SEM range for the student meets or exceeds the required aptitude, then the AIG Program Team will reconvene.

·The AIG Program Team will reach a consensus on the identification needs of the student.

·If the AIG Program Team determines that identification is necessary and appropriate, then the AIG Chair will complete a Disposition Sheet outlining the rationale for that decision.

Addendum for Middle School Placements

In considering students for AIG placement in middle school, the required aptitude test score indicator is 93rd percentile. On the WISC-IV individual aptitude test, this score corresponds to a Full-Scale IQ of 122. The Standard Error of Measurement on the WISC-IV is 3 points, which is added to and subtracted from the Full Scale IQ to give a range.

The following table gives Full Scale IQs on the WISC-IV and their corresponding SEM ranges. Students whose upper end of the range meets or exceeds the 93rd percentile should be considered for AIG identification at the middle school level. All decisions should be forwarded to the Administrative AIG Program Team for review. The AIG Program Coordinator will complete a Disposition Sheet outlining the rationale for the decision made by the Administrative AIG Program Team.
