JOB DESCRIPTION

SUPPORT WORKER

RESPONSIBLE TO : AREA HOUSING MANAGER / CO-ORDINATOR

JOB PURPOSE:

1. Under the supervision and direction of the Co-ordinator/ Area Housing Manager to provide intensive housing management and domestic support to residents who have a range of social, health or learning needs which, must be taken into account in assisting them fulfil the conditions of their residency agreements.

2. To work in accordance with the policies, practice, and procedures as laid down by the Board of Management of BBHA in liaison with partner agencies.

MAIN DUTIES

1.  To provide a service to residents of the Association, in ensuring that the day to day needs of individual residents are met.

2.  To provide with the Co-ordinator and other colleagues, an ongoing programme of support to the Associations residents.

3.  To be responsible for the collection and recording of weekly charge payments from residents.

4.  Where appropriate to ensure that food is purchased, prepared and made available to the residents of the Association, wherever possible encouraging residents to partake in shopping and meal preparation.

5.  Where appropriate to keep records of weekly household expenditure.

6.  To ensure that the house is kept clean, tidy and in a good state of repair, encouraging residents to take part, wherever possible, in the cleaning of the communal areas of the house and of their own rooms.

7.  To undertake “ call-out” duties where required.

8.  To help residents make the best use of local resources and to ensure that their health and welfare is not neglected.

9.  To attend staff and house meetings and give verbal and/or written reports where required.

10. Other duties consistent with the successful management of the organisation, as reasonably directed by the Co-ordinator/ Area Housing Manager.

GENERAL TERM AND CONDITIONS

Annual Remuneration £14,840

Hours of work 37.5hrs

Annual Leave 26 days

Notice Period 1 Month

All staff are employed subject to the satisfactory completion of Twelve months probationary period.

Specific terms and conditions will be as stated in the Terms and Conditions of Employment document.

Supervision and direction will be provided by the Coordinator/Area Housing Manager.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

It is expected that the successful candidate will have an understanding of the issues around homelessness, and have experience in working with at least one of the following groups; rough sleepers, offenders, ex-offenders, alcohol or substance misusers, people with mental health problems, people with behavioural problems, people with disabilities including learning disabilities.

The successful candidate will also be expected to demonstrate the following qualities, skills or knowledge.

ESSENTIAL

1.  A good understanding of the needs of homeless people

2.  Effective range of inter-personal skills

3.  Experience of recording and handling cash

4.  Good recording, administration and bookkeeping skills

5.  Evidence of practical skills relevant to job description

6.  An understanding of confidentiality and the ability to deal with information of a highly personal and sensitive nature

7.  Ability to work within a team and on own initiative

8.  Willingness to work in a flexible manner

9.  Ability to use supervision and support of Line Manager and colleagues effectively

10. Ability to deal effectively with situations of conflict and aggression in an assertive and non-violent manner

DESIRABLE

1.  Experience of work with homeless people or similar disadvantaged group

2.  Awareness of supported housing provision

3.  Experience of working with people with mental health problems, learning disabilities, behavioural problems and/or substance dependence

4.  Experience of advice and information work
